VILLIAM B. CANDEE, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING METAL CYLINDERS TO WOOD PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,745, dated February 24, 1874; application filed D ecember To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. B. CANDEE, of the city of Galesburg, county of Knox "and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in the Manner of Attaching Metal Cylinders or Bucket-Chambers to Wood Pumps, of which the following is a specification:
It is a fact long known that metal cylinders or bucket-chambers inserted in wood pumps, although so perfectly tted to the bore of pump-log as to render the joint air and water tight when inserted, will, by the action or et'- fect of the water upon the wood, soon become loose and unfit for use.
The object of my invention is to secure this metal cylinder or bucket-chamber inside the bore of a wood pump so that it will remain tight.
Wood tube in such manner that one portion of it shall perfectly t the inside of the metal cylinder or bucket-chamber, while the remaining portion shall perfectly t the bore of the pump-log near its lower end. The pump-log is bored, from the top end down to within a short distance of the lower end, sufliciently, large to receive the metal cylinder or bucket chamber, the remaining portion of pump-log being bored the proper size to receive one portion of the Wood tube, so that when the metal cylinder or bucket-ch amber is dropped or driven to its place, and the wood tube is driven down until the lower part of it is firmly inserted in the bore of pumplog, whilethe upper part remains in and fits tightly the lower end of the metal cylinder or bucket chamber, thus securely holding` it to its place, and forming a complete air and water tight joint, the tendency of the wood tube to enlarge when brought in contact with the water will cause it to re- A is the lower partof a pump-log. B is the metal cylinder or bucket-chamber. C is the wood tube used to connect the metal cylinder B with the pump-log A.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, withpump-log A, of the wood tube C and the metal cylinder B, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
TILL IAM B. CANDEE.
