Description

2Sheets--Sheet1. B. A. HUDGE. I PistonLPack-ings. N0.142,914. Patented September16,187 3.
S ATEs PATENT IMPRQVEMENT IN PlSTON-PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 142,914, dated September 16, 1873; application filed July 29, 1873. I
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, CHARLES AMos Hones, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Packing and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arran gemcnt of a piston-packing, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertai'ns to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of my piston, part in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the packing-rim gs. Y A represents a solid ring, which slides on the arms or lugs B B of the piston, which ring is turned about one and. three-quarter inchsmaller than the diameter of the cylinder. Around the ringAis placed an eccentric ring, (3, which operates as a spring, and at the same time carries the packing true and keeps the piston in the center of the cylinder by having one side of said ring turned oneeighth of an inch thicker than the other. I) D represent the outside or packing rings, which come to the face of the cylinder, and are about half an inch thick. These are turned, by a larger spring, into the cylinder. The eccentric ring 0, acting as a spring, carries the packing-rings true, and keeps the piston in the center of the cylinder. When the packingrings D D wear down or get small, so as to cause the engine to blow, a liner is placed inside of the outside rings D D, and on the outside of the eccentric ring (J, which decreases the size of the said eccentric ring, it. being an open ring, or causes it to spring down and force the liner against the outside rings D. D; l his 'stopsthe-engine from biowingandbrings the piston back to the center of the cylinder, where it was originally. The outside or pack ing rings D D are made open, and doweled by means of a dowel, a, of any suitable construction, so that they can turn on the eccentric or spring ring 0, and not allow the openings to come together, which would cause the steam to blow through from one end of the cylinder to the other. E represents the "piston'rod, and G G the heads secured to the arms B B, as shown.
-Having thus fully described my -nvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is. r
The combination, with the shaft E and arms B B, of the solid ring A, eccentric or spring ring (J, and the outside or packing ringsD D, with dowels a, all substantially'as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claini the foregoingI have hereunto set my ha his 16th davot: J uly, 1873.
