Description

H. ANDERSON. composing Rules.
N0,l47,738 Patented Feb. 24.1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT A rrrcn.
ISAAC H. ANDERSON, OF SOUTH BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSINGRULES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,73, dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 8, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, Isaac Il. ANDERSON, of South Boston, in the county of Suii'oll; and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Oomposing-Rule, of which th e following is a specification:
This improved composing-rule is constructed in parts, which are applied together so that they can be elongated and shortened to adapt it for setting the adjustable slide of the composing-stick to varying qualities of work as, for instance, to 161110., l2mo., 8vo., job-work, Ste.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved composin g-rule is illustrated, Figure 1' being a face view oi' a com posing-stick, showing the rule as applied thereto; Fig. 2, a face viewof the rule itself, and in its shortest length Fig. 3,`a similar face View to Fig. 2, but with the rule in its longest length; Fig. 4, longitudinal section otl Fig. 2 and Fig. 5, cross-section of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, A represents a composingstick, and B my improved composing rule. The rule B in the present instance is shown as made in two parts, a and b. Each ot' these parts a and b is similarly coi'istructed-that is, with a case portion, c, and an extensiontongue, cl, of one -side of the case portion. The tongue d of each part enters the case of the other part, (see Fig. 4 particularly,) and when they are so applied together the tongue extensions t closely within the eases, and bear the lat face of the one against the iiat face of the other. Thus the two parts of the rule can be drawn out from or pushed into each other, which in the `iirst inst-ance len gthens the rule, and in the second instance shortens the rule, the movement to elongate being ot' course li1nited to the length ofthe tongue and case, and to shorten tothe combined length of the two eases because of the abutment of their corners h. (See Fig. 2.) Y
A rule thus constructed is susceptible of adjustment to varying widths of work, thus obviating the necessity, as heretofore, of a rule for each width of work.
In lieu of making the rule in two parts, as
described, it may be made in more, but two are sufficient for all practical purposes.
It is obvious the rule can be made of any metal or material desired.
The end fof each part case c is beveled, as shown, so that the type and t spacing will not catch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A composing-rule so constructed as to be extensible, substantially as described, for the purpose specied.
The above specification oi my invention signed by me this 5th day of January, A. I). 1874.
