Description
Patented Dec. 11, 1923.
urrsn s'rarss TE T OF E- ARTHUR a. ENGMAN, or-oanromlonro.
METAL noon.
. 7 Application filed May 24, 1922; s m No. 563,228.
. particularly to this class of devices in which a translucent panel or light is employed.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a construction which will have the maximum rigidity, at the same time employing a minimum number of parts, thereby effecting a reduction in both the amount of material used and the labor necessary to assemble my device.
In the drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts;
Fig. 1 is afragmentary view of a door showing portions of the top and one of the side rails or stiles, a corner of the glass panel or light being shown therein.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of portions of the panel moulding, stile and binder moulding, spaced apart.
At 1 is indicated a vertical side rail or stile of a door. One edge of the sheet form ing the stile is bent inwardly, forming a flange 2. Spot welded or otherwise secured to the inner face of the stile at a point spaced slightly from the flanged edge 2, is the portion 3 of a binder strip or moulding. As will be clearly seen in the drawing, the portion 3 of the binder is the edge thereof farthest from the flange 2. At the edge of the portion 3 nearest the flange 2, the binder moulding is bent at right angles and extends inwardly as at 4, and is then bent and extends toward the flange 2 and is parallel with the face of the stile as indicated at 5.
Extending from the portion 5 and toward the adjacent side of the stile is a portion 6 which is parallel with the portion 4, the moulding being again bent and terminating in a flange 7 which is parallel with the face of the stile and spaced slightly therefrom. In direct alinement with the above described binder and spot welded or otherwise secured to the opposite side of the stile, is a second binder which is identical in every detail with the one described.
By the peculiar arrangement of the portions 4, 5 and 6, a groove 8 is formed in the binders and fitting within the groove in the first mentioned binder is the in-turned flanged end 9 ofthe member 10 which forms one. half of the panel moulding. The portion 11 of the member 10 which is adjacent the flange 9, fits within the space between the flange 7 and the face of the stile and is bent as at 12 to fit between the extremity of the said flange 7 and the flange 2. As
clearlyseen in Figs. 2 and 3, the member 10 is shaped to describe an arc and is then bent backwardly as at 13, the portion 13 forming one face of the channel within which the glass panel is secured.
Extending from the portion 13 to the op- 1 posite side of, the stile is a web 14 and formed in the said. web in vertical alinement, is a plurality of threaded apertures 15 which are for a purpose to be hereinafter set out. The web 15 terminates in a laterally extending portion which in turn is bent to fit between the adjacent side of the stile and the flange 7 on the attachedbinder and is then bent inwardlytoform flange 16 which fits within the groove in the said binder.
The sheet forming the side of the stile opposite the side carrying the flange 2, is bent inwardly at a point in direct alinement with the said flange and then develops into an arcuate portion 17 which reaches to the panel 18 and is then bent backwardly as at 19 and completes the groove for the said panel. A plurality of apertures 20 are formed in the portion 17 in alinement with of the sheet it to form one half of the panel moulding, the possibility of the glass becoming loose and rattling or breaking from vibration is eliminated.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, 2
a sheet of metal bent to form a stile, a. pair of binders secured to the opposite, inner walls of said sheet, a strip secured by said binders and bent toform one half of apanel moulding, one side of said sheet being extended andforming the opposite half of said panel moulding. i
2. In a metal door, a sheet of metal bent to form a, stile, a pair of binders secured to the opposite inner Walls of said'stile, a
strip secured by said binders and bent to.
form one half of a panel moulding, one side of said sheet being extended and forming the other half of said panel moulding,
said moulding and threaded through said strip and arranged to hold both halves of said moulding against the panel When so positioned.
In testimony that I claim the above I have 15 hereunto subscribed my name.
ARTHUR J. ENGMAN.
