The member 5 as shown'is also, formedof a vertical series ofpl'at'e like section's 18f0'f tllegeneral sectional channel shape shown in the drawings, each presenting a relatively flat portion 19 intermediate its lateral portions 20, these sections being arranged one above the other in spaced relation within the angle of the section 15, the flat portions 19 of the sec-- tions 18 extending in a position directly opposite the deepest portion of the angle of the member 15 as shown in Fig. 1. The sections 18 are preferably corrugated and flanged, as represented at 21 and 22 respec tively in Fig. 3, to render them relatively stiff and adapt them to effectually resist stresses, tending to deflect them, exerted against them by the devices hereinafter referred to and engaged thereby for firmly clamping the panes 6 and 7 between the members 4 and 5.
The means 8 are shown as of the screwbolt type, it being preferred that a number of these screw-bolts be provided in a vertical series, these screw-bolts extending through the portions 19 of the member 5 and the portions 13 of the member 4. One of these similar screw-bolts is represented at 23, its head portion, represented at 24, being located at the outer surface of the portion 19 of the section 18, a nut 25 being screwed upon the threaded end of the bolt and against the rear side of the portion 19. The extremity of the bolt 23, opposite its headed portion, has screwed thereon a combined nut and shouldered bushing 26 which extends into the channel provided by the deflected portion 13 at the rear side of the bar section 4 and also into the opening represented at 27 through which the bolt 23 extends, the shouldered portion 28 of this bushing overlapping the bottom wall of said groove, it being understood that upon tightening the nut 26 the sections 4 and 5 will be drawn toward each other with the result of firmly clamping the panes 6 and 7 between the rounded surfaces of the portions 11 of the member 4, and the portions 17 of the member 5.
The means 14 hereinbefore referred to, by preference and as shown, are in the form of separate plates 29 located in the space between the portions 11 of the member 4 and arranged in spaced relation in an upright series, these plates being preferably made of sheet metal and bent to present at their op posite edges at which they oppose the free edges of the parts 11, the grooved flanges 30 at which grooves they nest with the free edges of the portions 11 as shown, these plates containing vertically elongated slots 31 therein through which the screw devices 23 extend.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the means 14, which may, if desired, be a continuous strip instead of formed in sections as stated, serves to prevent the rolling or rocking of the member 4 relating to the member 5 and the pane 6, and 7, in the drawing of the members 4 and 5 together with clamping contact with the panes, these means in effect producing a centralizing of the two members 4 and 5 relative to each other and insuring the assembly of the parts of the store-front-corner construction in the desired position and causing the structure to present the desired strength and rigidity.
The slots 81 are preferably formed by punching them in the plates and deflecting the metal, forming the walls of the slots, as shown at 31 in Fig. 1, to provide smooth extended bearing-surfaces for the bolts 23 extending therethrough and which closely fit between opposed walls of these slots.
It will furthermore be noted that by con structing a corner-bar in accordance with my invention the need of providing, between the inner surfaces of the panes 6 and 7 and the inner member of the corner-bar, a separate sheet metal member, as is common practice, is avoided by reason of the construction of the member 4 as shown and the sheathing thereof with a material, copper being preferred as hereinbefore stated, which may contact with the glass without danger of injury to the latter.
It will also be understood that the provision of the member 4, as described, adapts it for use where the panes 6 and 7 are to extend at different angles relative to each other therefore avoiding the necessity of providing a large {number of different forms of inner corner-bar members for use Where the angles at which the panes are set, differ. When the form of outer member 5, as shown, is used, difierent forms of these members in which the angle at which the portions 17 extend. relative to each other,
would be provided to correspond with the angular relation of the panes to each other.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A store-front-construction corner-bar comprising a body member formed with spaced-apart portions forming a part of said body and affording seating surfaces for the panes of glass to be secured in position in different angular positions of said panes, an apertured member extending into the space between said portions and opposing the latter, substantially in line with said surfaces, a member to extend adjacent the surfaces of said panes opposite those engagin said seating surfaces, and means for effecting the clamping of said panes between said body member and said last-named member, said means engaging all of said members and operating to prevent turning of said body member and said last-named member relative to each other.
2. A store-front-construction corner-bar comprising a body member of substantially U-shape in cross section with its edge portions deflected to form curved seating surfaces for the panes of glass to be secured in position in different angular positions of said panes, and an apertured member extending into the space between said portions and opposing the latter substantially in line with said seating surfaces, a member to extend adjacent the surfaces of said panes 0pposite those engaging said seating surfaces, and means for effecting the clamping of said panes between said body member and said last-named member, said means engaging all of said members and operating to prevent turning of said body member and said lastnamed member relative to each other.
3. A store-front-construction corner-bar comprising a body member of substantially U-shape in cross-section with its edge portions inwardly turned and forming curved seating surfaces for the panes of glass to be secured in position in different angular positions of said panes, and an apertured member extending into the space between said portions with its ends recessed to receive said inturned edge portions of said body member, a member to extend adjacent the surfaces of said panes opposite those engaging said seating surfaces, and means for effecting the clamping of said panes between said body member and said lastnamed member, said means engaging all of said members and operating to prevent turning of said body member and said lastnamed member relative to each other.
4;. A store-front-construction corner-bar comprising a member presenting surfaces spaced apart to form seating surfaces for the anes of glass to be secured in position in different angular positions of said panes, said member being located within the angle formed by the panes, a member to extend adjacent the surfaces of said panes opposite those engaging said seating surfaces, a third member located between the portions presenting said surfaces and holdin them in spaced relation, and means for eflecting the clamping of said panes between said first and second named members and engaging all of said members and operating to prevent turning of said first and second named members relative to each other.
