PIPE CLEANER.
Application filed May 21, 1921.
clean out the stems of smokers pipes, and a casing in which the cleaner may be enclosed when not in use, to avoid soiling of external objects.
It is an object of the invention to provide I an improved pipe cleaner which will be simple in construction and at the same time efficient in operation. It is also an object of the invention to provide improved means for retraining the cleaner in a casing or holder for carrying the same. Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of the casing or holder with the cleaner inserted therein, the upper end of the casing being broken away to show the man ner of retaining the cleaner in the holder. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cleaner detached and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lower or digger end of the cleaner looking from the left of Fig. 2 and also showing the manner in which a swab, such as absorbent cotton, a piece of cloth or similar article may be held in the end of the cleaner. I
Numeral 1 indicates the casing or holder, which is preferably made of metal and is in the form of a tube closed at one end by a cap 2 or otherwise, but open at the other end to allow the insertion of the pipe cleaning implement therein. A spring-clip 3 having aball end 4 is preferably applied to the exterior of the holder to frictionally engage with the users clothing, such as the edge of a pocket, when the holder is inserted therein, to prevent it from accidentally falling out.
The cleaning implement is constructed preferably of a single piece of wire flattened at one end to form a digger 5 for use in cutting out or breaking up any burned tobacco or nicotine which may collect in the bottom of the bowl of the pipe and at the entrance of the stem. It is also adapted for use in removing obstructions in the pipe stem. This flattened or digger end portion is provided with an eye 6 open at one side 7 to allow for the ready insertion of a swab Serial No. 471,329.
of some fibre material 8, such as a piece of cloth or cotton, which may be thereby car-1 ried through the hole or duct in the pipe stem to wipe the walls thereof. Immediately.
adjacent the digger 5, the wire or rod is crimped as at 9 for a desired portion of its length to provide a plurality of'cleaning points 10 which will act to loosen and remove any incrustatio-n on the walls of the smoke passage when the implement is inserted or rotated therein. Also because of this crimping the implement will yield longitudinally if the digger portion 5 should meet with an obstruction difiicult of dis-. lodgement when it is inserted in the smoke passage or bowl, and therefore would be less liable to injure the pipe if care was not exercised by the user. Between the crimped portion 9 and the handle 11 the blank is straight as at 12.
The handle 11 is formed blank sidewise at an angle to the portion 12 as shown at 13, then bending it in the opposite direction as at 14 for a short distance, and then bending it to form a loop 15, so that the end lies on the opposite side of the blank from the portions 13 and 14,
by bending the 1 and is formed with a portion 16 opposed to portion 14 and a portion 17 opposed to the portion 13. It will be noted the portions 13 and 17 diverge toward the loop 15 while the portions 14 and 16 are substantially parallel or slightly converging.
The distance between the outer surfaces of portions 14 and 16 is greater than the internal diameter of the holder 1 so that when the implement is inserted in this hold er the end portions 17 and 16 are pressed inwardly, and as the implement is made of resilient material these outer surfaces will frictionally engage the inner surface of the holder and prevent the accidental removal 7 of the implement from the holder. The loop 15 also provides a convenient handle so that when it is desired to use the implement it may be readily withdrawn by grasping and pulling thereon.
It will be observed that I have devised a simple and efiective cleaning implement, and also a simple and effective means for securing the same in a holder, but so that it i may be readily removed for use.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is- 1. The combination with a casing or holder, of a pipe cleaning implement comprising a resilient wlre bent ad acent one end to .form a loop and having laterally spaced por- 2. The combination with a casing or holder open at one end, of a pipe cleaning implement comprising a resilient wire bent to form a loop and spaced portions adjacent said loop, said spaced por ions adapted to frictionally engage the Walls or" the casing when the implement is inserted therein.
3. A pipe cleaning implement comprising a wire flattened at one end to form a digger, said Wire also crimped in opposite directions for a given length adjacent said digger to provide a plurality of spaced cleaning points on opposite sides of the wire or rod.
4. A pipe cleaning implement comprising a resilient wire, said wire being crimped in different directions for a portion of its length adjacent one end thereof to provide a plurality of spaced cleaning points on different sides of the Wire said wire being also provided at said end with means for holding a cleaning swab;
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature. v
FREDERICK s. BROWN.
