Description

MARY L. PERRY;
Combined Sofas and Beds'teads.
.N0.147,83. Patented Feb.17,1874.
:u I llllllllllllll Il s @mun UNI'rnn STATES PATENT @Enron MARY L. PERRY, OF BOSTON', MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SFAS AND BEDSTEADS.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.147,683, dated February 17, 1874; application filed v October 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MARY L. PERRY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sofa and Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part-'of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement .of a combined sofa and bedstead, as will'be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, showing the sofa with the bed tipped over forming the back of the sofa. Fig. 2 is a plan View, showing the bed in position. Fig. 3 is a rear view, and Fig. 4 a transverse vertical section, of the same.
A represents a sofa or lounge, of any suita-` ble construction, provided with arms or armrests B B. C represents the bed-frame, which is hinged at the center of its bottom to the rear edges of the arm-rests B B, and provided on its rear side with two pivoted legs, D D. These legs are folded and rest against pins a a, when the bed is not in use, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3, and when the bed is in use they are thrown down to support the rear part of the bed-frame G, while the front part is supported bythe armrests B B. G G represent the head and foot boards, which are 'hinged to the ends of the bed-frame C, and
are held in an upright position by means of buttons b b, when the bed `is in use. Then the bed is not in use and the bed-frame tipped over backward, the head and foot boards G Gr are folded inward to hold the bedding in the frame. The head and footboards may be made to fold outward so as to form ornamental side pieces to the sofa or lounge, if so desired. The bed-bottom, on the under or front side, as well as the seat of the sofa or lounge, may be upholstered `in any desired manner, and the bed-bottom made of slats or otherwise.
By this construction the sofa or lounge may be used in the day time as a seat in any room desired, and will take up no more room than an ordinary sofa, and at night it can be drawn out from the wall and the bed-frameturned on its hinges to form a complete bedstead.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bed-frame C, provided with the hinged head and foot boards G G, and pivoted legs D D, in combination with sofa A, and rests B B, all constructed and arranged substanti ally as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I-afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY L. PERRY.
Witnesses Josnrn TILMANN, G. WILLHAUGK.
