Description
Patented Dec. l, E523.
IRA A. BURNETT, OF ILLNOL'S.
ANDREL.
Application filed March 3G,
To all whom if; may concern:
Be it known that l. Inn il.. BUnNnrr, a citizen ot the United States, residing ai' Chicago, in the county of Cook and of illinois, have invented certain ne eral useful improvements in Dental Mandrels, or" which the following` is a spocication.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in dental mandrels, used in connection with dental-engine hand-pieces 'for numerous purposes, and particularly to that type thereof designed 'for use in holding paper disks employed in dental operations ot various kinds.
The principal. obiect of the invention is the provision of a mandrelwhioh will positively hold the paper disks commonly used by dentists, in such. a manner as to prevent them becoming' loose on the mandrel and ineffective upon the reverse revenaient of tho engine hand-piece, thereby overcoming this annoying diiificulty7 which all dentists have experienced. and furnishing a. mandrel adapted `tor rotation either direction without the disk carried thereby becomingloose.
An additional object ot' the invention is7 to provide a` mandrel having means whereby a. disk can be quickly and tightly secured thereon by the rotation of the mandrel while it is in operative connection with the engine hand-piece. or the removal ot the disk can be readily effected while the mandrel is so connected, by the reverse rotation thereof.
The invention contemplates as a further object thereof, the provision ot moans for so mountingf and holding the disk that it ran be readily pierced by certain elements ot the device without unduly 'flexing the disk, and so that it will be maintained in the same plane throughout its entire diameter.
The invention will be explained and more readily understood when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates various embodiments oit which the invention is susceptible, it being understood that various other arrangements and modioations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as they come within the scope oi" the appended claims forming a part hereof.
In the dra.wing,-
Fig. 1 is a `@greatly enlarged plan view of a paper disk and one of the clamping or gripping members of the mandrel.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken Serial No. 528,750.
on. line 2 of Fig. tion indicated by the m fl; is an in er face view ot one of the clamping members of the device.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified 'forni of said clamping member? and Fig. 6 is a view similar to'that of Fig. 2 and of like parts, but showingn a modiiication in the construction of the pin-carry ing member oi' the device.
Correspondinl? numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
Referring' new more particularly to Figs. to l inclusive of the drawing. the shank of the mandrel is designated by the numoral 10, and as shown, has integral there with at one of its ends a clamping mein-- ber 11 which is provided with a plurality of guide openings 12 by preference two et such openings7 which are located diametrically opposite each other as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and ot the drawing. A portion oi" the shank 10 below the clarnpin53Y member 11 thereon is provided with letthan d screw-threads which terminate at their lower ends at about the longitudinal middle or" the shank and at their upper ends a d ...lince below the lower surface of the head 11. The unthreaded portion of the shank 10 is adapted to nt in suitable socket in an engine hand-piece and to be held therein by a suitable clutch mechanism with which such hand-pieces are provided. y
Extended centrally through the member 1l ot the shank ard longitudinally into the ppelportion oi the shank is a screwthreaded opening 13 for the reception ot a screw M extended centrally from the inner tace of the other clampingy member 15 of the device. rlhe threads oif the screw 14 are of the rigrhthand type, while as before stated, the threads on the exterior ofy the shank are lett-handed ones. The clamping member 15 is provided on its inner or lower surface and centrally thereof with an annular enlargement 16 from the free end of which the screw 14 is extended. The inner orlower surface ot the member 15 is provided with an annular flange 17 which as shown is spaced trom the enlargement 16 but terminates at its edge in the same plane with the tree end of the enlargement 16 of said member. The floor or surface of the invasa? l to be unscrewed from the member l and remotf'ed the disk if desired. ras the member or nut 26 is swiveled to the coliar 20, it is apparent 'that by turning the member 26 in the proper direction, said collar and the pins 2l which it carries will be correspondingly advanced er retracted.
ln the modified construction shown in F 6, practically the same operation as just above described empioyed, except that by the use of the spring 28, the plate or collar carrying the 2l is held in Contact with the controlling member 26 instead of being swiveled thereto as in the former described construction.
While l have shown in Fig. 2, the slidable collar equipped with two pins 2l, and i 6 the collar or plate 29 equipped with a pan pins for piercing the dislr and for engaging the detachable clamping member,
and while I prefer to use a pair of pinsin each of the constructions, yet it is obvious that one pin only may be used, without a departure 'from the spirit ot the invention.
Having thus :fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A dental mandrel comprising a shank provided at one oit' its ends with a clamping member having a. screw-threaded opening, sad shank having a screw-threaded portion en its exterior, another clamping member having a screw to engage said opening and adapted to (go-operate with the iirst named member to clamp a disk between them, a controlling member in screw engagement with the shank, a collar slidably mounted on the shank between the controlling member and the first named clamping member, 'and at least one pin carrled by said collar and erce the disk and to engage the i jing member of the device. ievice or. the class described, `the combination with shank having `external eorewthreads and provided at one of its ends with a clamping member having centrally therein a screw-threaded opening and also having at least one guide opening, of another clamping member having a screw to detachably engage said threaded opening and adapted to co-operate with the first named member to clamp a disk between them, the last named clamping member hat ing on its surface adjacent the first named clamping member an enlargement at the base of its rscrew and at its periphery a flange terminating substantially in the same piane with said eniargement, means slida'bly mounted on the shank and having at least one pin operable in a guide opening oi the first named clamping member for piercing the disk and engaging the detachable clamp` ing member between its flange and said enlargement, and means on the shank co-operating with said slidable means .tor advancing and retracting the latter.
3. A clamping member having on its surface adjacent the object to be clamped an annular enlargement 'provided with a screw extended centrally therefrom and having at its edge a flange spaced romsaid enlargement and terminating substantially in a piane Vwith the end of the enlargement ad'- jacent the object to be clamped, said member also having the base of the space between its enlargement and anges recessed and adapted' for engagement with a projection inserted into said spaces.
