ASH SIFTER.
Application filed August 80, 1923. Serial No. 660,162.
To all 'Lo/tom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AroLoNm Sarrieri., a citizen of Poland, residing at N ew Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Ash Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in ash sifters.
An important object of this invention is to provide an improved means for facilitat ing the insertion and removal of the ash receiving means.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong and dur able, of few parts, and one that may be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Other objects and advantages will readily become apparent during the course of the following description, in which Figure 1 is an elevational perspective view of my improved ash sifter, y
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of Fig l,
Figure 3 is a horizontal cross-sectional view taken on line III-Ill of Fig. 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view with parts shown in cross section,
Figure 5 is a horizontal cross-sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 4,
Figure 6 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view talren on line VI-VI of Fig. 1 with parts thereof shown in section.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the ash discharge guiding means, and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the ash receiving means and support therefor.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 9 indicates the body portion of my improved ash sifter having a bail l() pivotally attached thereto as at 11. The upper end or top of the body portion 10 has the usual cover 12 hingedly connected. to the body portion 9, as at 13, and provided with a hasp 14 which en* gages an eye 15 secured to the body portion 9. The body portion 9, in the lower portion thereof, is further provided with a door 16 which is hingedly connected to the body poi'- tion 9 as at 17.
Journaled in the upper portion of the body 9 is a rotatable shaft 18 provided with an operating handle 19. Suitably keyed to the rotating shaft 18, is a hollow shaft 20 which has secured thereto in any suitable manner a plurality of radiating teeth 21. There is also provided a sifting screen 22 which may be secured to the body portion 9 in any desired manner. This sifting screen, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is mounted below the radiating teeth 21 carried by the hollow shaft 20. Mounted between the screen 22 and the body portion 9, is a hopper or ash discharge guide member 23 of substantially. inverted conical shape which is provided with an upper annular rim 24 and a lower annular rim 25. This hopper 23 is secured to the body portion 9 by means of rivets or the like 26 which are passed through the body portion 9 and the openingsV 27 formed in the upper annular rim 24 of the hopper 23. The lower annular rim of the hopper 23 is provided with bayonet slots 28, the purpose of which will be more fully hereinafter described. y
The body portion 9, is further provided with a bottom 29 which has formed integgrally therewith a circular seat portion 30 which is provided with a divergent flange 31, said divergent flange 31 having extended guide portions 32, said guide portions 32 being supported by a plate having a horizontal portion as at 33 and a downwardly inclined portion 34. |The plate portion 33 is supported by the lower ortion 35 of the opening 36 formed in the ody 9.
Removably positioned within the body 9, is an ash receptacle 36, which is provided with a handle 37. Formed integrally with said ash receptacle 36 are upstruck ears 38, which are provided with pins 39 adapted to be engaged within the bayonet slots 28 carried by the hub 23. rllhe ash receptacle 36 is further provided with an auxiliary supporting means consisting of a coiled eX- pansion spring 40, which may be secured to thev ash receptacle 36 by means of staples 41 or the like.
The operation is as follows y Upon the ash receptacle 36 becoming filled with sifted ashes, the door 16 may be opened and the receptacle 36 grasped by the handle 37, and given a small turn to the left thereby releasing the pins 39 from the bayonet slots 28. The weight of the ashes within the. receptacle 36 will then compress the coiled expansion spring 40, thereby bringing the top of the ash receptacle 36 below the bot-toni of the annular rim 25 formed on the hopper 23, thereby allowing the ash ret ceptacle 36 to be pulled foi-ward and out of the body 9. After the ashes have been thus removed from the ash receptacle 36, the coil expansion spring 40 is positioned between the flanges 32 and rested on the horizontal plate portio-n 33 and pushed down the inclined surface 84 until the spring 4:0 comes to rest on the seat 30 formed by the dive-rgent flange 31. By forcing downwardly on the ash receptacle 36, to compress `the coil spring 40, the pins 39 carried by the ears 38 may be alined kwith the bayonet slot 28, whereby upon releasing the pressure on the spring 40 it will torce the said pin 39 Vinto .the bayonet slot, and a small turn to the right will lock the same therein.
Vhile I have shown and described one form of my invention, itl is to be understood that various changes in the shape, size, .and arrangement of iparts may be resorted to sitter andV secured to said ash sitter, a lower annular rim provided with bayonet slots formed on said hopper, an ash receptacle provided with upstruck ears, said ears provided with pins adapted to engage and to vbe supported by said bayonet slots, a i'esilient auxiliary supporting means associated with said ash receptacle and guide means as soc-lated with said resilient supporting In testimony whereof I affix my si gnature.
