DEVICE FOR IEARKING BALLS.
Application filed December 19, 1922. Serial No. 607,917.
permanently recorded on the outer surface of the ball.
Heretofore, it has been a common practice to place on the ball only the initials of the owner of the ball. The present invention is for the purpose of impressing the full name of the owner by employing changeable or removable type; the type being provided with means for attaching and securing the same to a flexible band, and by constricting the ba'ld and the type about the ball the type is forced against the outer casing of the golf ball, it being understood that the type is first inked or if desired heated to a suitable temperature, whereby the casing is partially softened, so that a distinct impression may be made in the outer surface.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of the specification Fig. 1 is a side elevational View showing the complete device and the manner of using the same to impress the name on the ball. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the flexible band to which the type is attached.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the type blocks. Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of placing the type block on the band, or strip,
of flexible material before it is attached and 6. 7 designates a suitable handle having pins 8 for receiving the eyes 5 and 6. 9 designates one of the type blocks which is formed with the upwardly pro-q jecting side edges 10 and 11, and also an upwardly extending cylindrical projection 12 which is designed to enter one of the openings 4c of the strip 3. The flanges l0 and 11 serve to form a channel, or
grooved portion in the top of the type block;
the width of this channel being substanmetal 3, as shown. When the part 12 is inserted in one of the openings 4", the flanges will project above the upper surface of the strip 3. They are now bent or folded downward against the upper surface of the strip or band 3, as shown in Fig. 5 for securing the block to the strip. The part 18 of the type blocks 9 indicates the type portion that carries the letter of the block and forms the depression below the outer surface of the golf ball, as indicated in Fig. l at 13'.
By using a band, as shown, it is possible to embed type blocks bearing the whole name of the owner, and by using blocks of different sizes and bands of different lengths as many letters or symbols may be l111- pressed on the ball as desired.
The permanent impression produced by the type blocks on the outer surface of the ball is indicated in Fig. l. at 14:.
The band with the removable letters permits the impressions to be made on the ball substantially throughout the entire circumference of the ball, so that the whole name of the owner of the ball may be impressed.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a device for forming impressions on the outer surface of a golf ball, a member flexible throughout its length and formed with a series or plurality of openings therein, said openings being for the purpose of removably attaching individual impression forming devices for building up the full name of the owner when impressed on the ball and designed to be attached to the said flexible member at different portions of its length commensurate with the length of the name to be impressed, means for constricting the member uniformly throughout substantially its .tially equal to the width of the strip of length to force the devices into the outer surface of the ball, as described, whereby the full name of the owner of the ball will appear thereon.
2. A device for marking golf balls comprising, in combination, with a flexible member of means for attaching a plurality of removable type blocks to the member comprising openings in the flexible member a part on the blocks for entering the openings and bendable parts on the blocks for engaging the member, and means for constricting the member about the ball for forcing the type blocks against the ball to bemarked.
3.,A device for the purpose described comprising in combination, a member formed with openings therein, type bearing blocks having parts for entering the open- 7 ings, andprojecting portions on the blocks for securing the same to the member, a handle member attached to the member for bending it into a circular form and for constricting its diameter about the ball to be marked when the handle is operated, whereby the blocks will be forced against the ball.
4-. A marking device for producing impressions in the outer surface of a golf ball, or the like, and comprising in combi-- nation, an elastic band, means for attaching changeableletter bearing blocks thereto, a handle, the ends of the band each being pivotally connected thereto at spaced points along the handle for bending the band into a circular form and for constricting the band when the handle is operated for forcing the bearing blocks against the ball. 7
5. A device for marking golf balls comprising in combination with a strip of bendable material, type blocks, devices for attaching the blocks thereto comprising projections on the blocks to form a channel to receive the strip, said projections being bendable and serving to align the type blocks with relation to each other.
