Y MARKING DEVICE.
v Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 1921.
Application led September 24, 192i()T Seria1'No.i412,447. i
Teelt/whom t may concern: Y
'Re it knownY that I, CHARLES VVINNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in MarkingDevices, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis vinvention relates to marking devices, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an `improved changeable stamp particularly adapted for marking price codes in articles of manufacture in retail housesA and the like, the stamp being so constructed that the type can be `quickly and easily Changed and held in operative position against'accidental displacement.
another object of the invention is to provide a markingstamp having a novel type of handle arranged `for receiving and holding the surplus marking' ycharacters and adapted for actuating the clamping member for holding the marking characters which A ,are to be used inthe stamping operation.
A still further object of the invention is to providey an improved marking device of the above character which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost. i
-lVith these and other-objects in view, the invention consists in' the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts yas will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:
Figure l is a perspectivev view of the improved marking stamp showing 'certain of the characters being held in operative stamping position against accidental displacement.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the stamp showing certain of the marking characters being held in operative position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical transverse section through the stamp showing certain of the marking characters 'being held in marking position.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section lthrough the same, and
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the handle for the improved stamp. l
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout 'the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved stamp which includes theclamp B for .the characters C and the handle D.
The clamp B for the characters Cincludes a bed plate 10 and the base-plate 1l.. vThese plates 10 and 11 are heldin spaced relation to each other bymeans offspaced posts or rods 12. These rods 12l are arranged adjacent to the opposite ends of the plates 10 and 11 and at the longitudinal medial line thereof. These posts or rods 12 havetheir yterminals upset as clearly shown in" Fig. 2
ofthedrawings. A clamping"plate'l` is slidably mounted between the plateslO and 11 and has its side edges notched as'at 14 for receiving the posts or rods 12, which form guide members for rthe same. The bed plate 10 is of substantially rectangular configuration and is provided with alongitudi'- nally extending' slot 15, through which the marking characters C are adaptedto extend. One longitudinal edge of the bed plate `l() is provided with a right angularly disposed 'flange 16 which forms a guide for alining the marking characters C in correctrelation to each other. The central portion of the clamping plate 13 has swivelly mounted therein the depending screw 17, which is mounted in a centrally disposed threaded .uNlTl-:D STATES PATENT OFFICE; "v
opening 1S. The lower surface of the clamping plate 13 is adapted to engage the upper surface of the marking character C which will be now described.
Each of the marking characters C includes a base 19, which extends substantially the entire width of the bed plate 10 and the depending marking portions 20 which are adaptedto extend through the slot 15 formed 'in the-bed plate. The upper end yof the screw 17 is formed integrally)with or rigidly connected to the handle which "will be now described. The handle D is preferably of hollow configuration and is ofa substantially inverted truncated conical shape and the hollow handle is adapted to receive the surplus marking characters designated by lthe numeral 2.1. The upper end of the hollow handle Dis provided with a substantially semi-circular rigid top plate or cover 22. This rigid cover 22 extends over substantially one half of the upper end of the hollow handle D and forms a bearing 23 for the rotatable pin 24, which carries the movable cover pla-te 25, which is also of a substantially semi-circular configuration. The movable cover plate 25 is adapted to be moved over the rigid cover plate 22 so as to permit Vaccess to be had to the interior of the hollow handle. The pin Qlhas secured characters which are to be used, are removed from thehollow handleD and the hollow handle D is rotated in such a direction as to feedl the screw 17 upwardly which will move the plate 13 away from the bed plate 10.. This will permit vof the easy removal and placing of the characters in the slot 15 and the bases 19thereof will extend beyond the longitudinal side walls of the slot. The provision of the guide flange 16 permits the perfect alinement of the characters in relation to `each other. The hollow handle D is then turned in a reverse direction which will feedthe plate 13 into tight engagement with the characters C. The displacement of the characters C while the stamp is in use 'is absolutely prevented, owing to the iirm engagement,V of the plate 13 with the characthecharacters withthe bed plate 10. The stamp is then used in the ordinary manner and owing to the exceptionally simple and durable construction thereof, the life of the stamp will be considerably enhanced.
Changes in'details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this I claim:v 1. A marking device comprising a pair of spaced superposed plates, a pair of guide posts carried by and arranged between the plates, one of the plates having a slot therein, stamping 'characters adapted to be titted in said slot, a movable clamping plate arranged between the first mentioned plates,
yand means for moving the clamping plate toward and 'away from the stamping characters.
2. A markin plate, a base pate arranged in superposed relationto'the bed plate, and a pair of guide posts arranged between the plates, a sliding clamping yplate arranged between the first mentioned plates and slidably carried by said guide posts, the bed plate having a longitudinally extending slot therein, marking characters arranged to lit in said slot, the marking characters having bases arranged to engage the upper surface of the device comprising a bed- -bed plate on opposite sides of the slot formed therein, a handle, and meansA actu- -ated by the handle for moving the clamping plate toward and away from the stamping characters.
3. A marking device comprising a pair of superposed plates, guide posts carried` by l andarranged between the plates, a clampmg plate arranged* between the first mentioned plates and slidablycarried by said posts, one of said plates havinga longitudinally extending slot formedV therein, marking characters including bases, and marking faces, ythe Vfaces, being adapted to extend through the slots andthe bases arranged to engage the plate von each side of the slot, a hollow handle, a screw carried by'. the handle, and means swivelly connecting the screw to said clampingplate. Y
