, county, and State of New York, and Dumont, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey have invented a new and useful Bazor Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has for an object to provide a holder for razor blades, for example such as are used in safety razors, which will I be exceedingly simple in construction and involve but few parts, to the end that the manufacturing cost of the holder may be reduced as much as possible.

Another object is to construct the holder in such a manner thatthe razor blade may be readily inserted in or removed therefrom, and in such a manner as to insure that the. cutting edge of the blade will be brought to proper' position for shaving when the razor is placed in the holder, and maintained in such position during use.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious and in part specifically pointed out in the description 3 hereinafter contained, in which is disclosed one embodiment of the invention; such emi bodiment, however, is to be considered merely as illustrative of its principle. In the drawings:

The invention is disclosed as applied to a. razor blade 1, which maybe of the type commonly used in safety razors, that is merely a rectangular metal stri having a beveled cutting edge 2. It will e obvious, however, that the particular type of razor blade with which the invention is used is not essential.

there is employed a holder comprising a metallic plate 3, having a transverse slot 4 therein adapted to receive the cutting edge 2 ofthe razor blade. As is shown particularly in Fig. 1, the razor blade 1 lies along the plate 3 with its cutting edge 2 projecting through the slot 4, the plate 3 preferably being slightly convex above the slot 4, as indicated at 5, in order to protect the cutting edge. It is also preferred to cut away the upper portion of the plate 3, as at 6, to provide a finger space at .which the blade 1 may be readily grasped whenever it is desired to remove thelatter from the holder. Suitable stops are also provided to fix. the position of the cutting edge 2 of the razor blade with regard to the slot 4, such stops in the present instance consisting of punched up projections 7 on the plate 3, which engage beneath the edge of the blade beyond the ends of the slot 4. The position of the stops may be readily adjusted by means of a prick punch to fix the cutting edge of the razor blade in such a way that the latter will cut evenly and properly throughout;

A suitable guard is associated with the slot 4 to act as a safety device during use of the razor. This ard is formed ina simple way in the embodiment illustrated, by bending inwardly the portion 8 of the plate which is below the slot 4, thus making the guard integral with the remainder of the holder. The guard 8 may be provided with teeth -9 "to further protect the razor edge, such teeth 9 in the present instance being staggered with similar oppositely directed teeth 9 upon the plate 3, so that the ends of two sets of teeth may project beyond each other, with the razor edge 2 between them. There is a certain amount of resiliency in the teeth, and when the razor blade is forced between them, they bear upon the blade and thus tend to maintain it in proper position as well as toprevent the blade from cutting too deeply, or unintentionally.

The razor blade 1 is pressed against plate 3 to hold the blade in proper position, by a suitable device, it being preferred to form this pressure applying device integral with the remainder of the razor holder so that the whole structure may involve as few parts as possible, and be correspondingly simple in operation and cheap to manufacture. 'In the form illustrated pressure is yieldingly applied to the razor blade 1 by means of a pair of spring fingers 10 extending upwardly and inwardly from the guard 8 and engaging the body of the razor blade. As shown, the fingers 10 are provided with strengthening ribs 11 stamped out to reinforce the same. To prevent the razor blade 1 from being unintentionally withdrawn from cutting position, devices such as the lugs 12, struck out from the upper edge of the plate 3, may be employed, such lugs preferably being provided with inclined engaging surfaces 13, which bear against the upper edge of the razor blade in such a manner that the resilient pressure applied through spring fingers 10 tends to force the cutting edge 2 of the razor firmly against the stops 7, and between

9, 9, thus holding the razor in proper cutting position. The razor blade may readily be withdrawn at any time, however,

- by grasping it within the finger space '6, and

tilting it backwardly against the pressure of spring fingers 10 until its upper edge clears the lugs 12. Ears 14, turned in from the sides of the plate 3, may also be provided if desired to prevent the blade from shifting its position longitudinally of the holder during use. A suitable handle 15 .will also be attached to the holder, a tongue 16 being provided between the spring fingerslO in the present instance, to which tongue the handle 15 may be attached in any desired manner.

It will be noted that the entire holder construction is of such character that it may be made of one sheet of material, it being merely necessary to stamp out a plate of a shape similar to that shown in Fig. 4, after which the holder may be put into final form by simple bending operations. At the same time, the razor blade is effectively held in proper position, although it may be readily removed from the holder at any time desired. The plate 3 and the other supporting parts for the blade therefor furthermore leave an open space rearwardly of the blade when the latter is in position, with the result that the blade is removed-by rearward motion, thus reducing the chances of injury to the cutting edge of the blade or to the user thereof in the same way the blade is inserted by a forward motion during which it is only necessary to-take hold of the rearward portion of the blade,

While thes ecific embodiment of the invention is disc -osed,.it will be obvious that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the following claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A razor holder comprising a plate having a transverse slot extending therethrough adapted to receive the cutting edge of a razor stops respectively adjacent the ends'of said slot to fix the position of the razor cutting edge with regard tothe slot, 1

stops respectively adjacent the ends of said slot to fix the position of the razor cutting edge with regard to the slot, and upwardly directed spring fingers extending from the lower portion of the plate, adapted to press the razor blade toward the plate and against the stops, with its cutting edge in the slot.

3. A- razor holder comprising a plate having a transverse slot therein adapted to receive the cutting edge of a razor, the portion of said plate below said slot being bent inwardly to provide a guard for the razor,

integral with the plate, stops respectively adjacent the ends of said slot to fix the position of the razor cutting edge with regard to the slot, lugs adjacent the upper edge of said plate havinginclined bearing surfaces adapted to engage the back of the razor blade, and a spring finger extending from the plate, adapted to press the razor blade against said. inclined bearing surfaces, and toward said stops.

4. A razor holder comprising a plate having a transverse slot therein adapted to receive the cutting edge of a razor, the portion of said plate below said slot being bent inwardly to provide a guard for the razor, integral with the plate, stops respectively adjacent the ends of said slot to fix the position of the razor cutting edge with regard to the slot, lugs adjacent the upper edge of said plate having inclined bearing surfaces adapted to engage the back of the razor blade, and means for pressing the razor blade against said inclined bearing surfaces to position the blade against said stops.

5. A razor blade comprising a plate having a transverse slot extending there through adapted to receive the cutting edge of a razor, the portion of said plate below said slot being bent inwardly to provide a guard for the razor, integral with the plate, upwardly directed springfingers extending from the lower portion of the plate, adapted to press the razor blade toward the "plate, and a handle extending from the portion of the platebetween said spring fingers.
