JOHN J. BAER, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOROF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO M. V. B. GOHO, OF SAME PLACE.
liVlPfF-OVEVIENI IN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,5B9, dated February 17,1874; application filed August To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BAER, of Lau caster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specirica-tion.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in folding chairs; and it consists in the arrangement and combination. of devices, which will be more fully described hereafter.
Figure l is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing it partly folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the same.
a represents the legs of my chair, each one of which have been divided into two parts, and have their middle ends secured in the sockets c formed upon the two plates d. These p1atcs\ are pivoted together at their centers, and allow the rlegs to be freely folded together, as shown in Fig. 2, when the chair is to be transported from place to place, or when no longer needed. Iivoted to thebottoms of the two lower front legs are the rockers e, which are loosely secured to the two rear legs by the hooks g, which straddles over their tops. The legs are braced in rear and front by the two cross-braces fi, which are pivoted at each end to the legs, and to each other at their centers, and which prevent the legs from closing together while the chair is in use. The back 2 and arms 3 are also pivoted to the legs, as shown in Fig. 1, the back proper being formed by a piece oil any suitable cloth which is tacked to the bars 2. The seat is formed by a suitable piece of cloth, 5, having a metal rod, 6, secured to its two side edges, which have an eye formed at each end, for fitting over studs 0r projections S, extending up ward from the top of each leg. The iron rods serve to both strengthen the legs while the chair is in use and prevent the seat from being torn or injured by the eyes giving way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1 l. The combination et' the legs a, plates d, braces t', rockers @,and hooks g, substantially as shown.
2. The legs a, plates c d, rockers c, braces i,
\seat 5, rods 6, and studs 8, combined and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1873.
JOI-IN J. BAER.
