Description

Nov. 27, 1923 v. BINGAY TRANSFORMER TANK COVER Filed Aug. 10; 1920 Patented Nov. 27 1923},
I hairs "7st";
ROBERT TRANSFORMER QOMPANY, ;A iCOBPQRfATION' OF PENNSYLVANIA..
\ 'rnansromyrnmmnx oovnav Application filed AngustllO, 1920. Serial No. 402,568.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bonner V. BINGAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented-mer tain new and useful Improvements in Transformer-Tank Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tanks for electric transformers of the oil cooled type and particularly to a cover for such a tank. The chief object of the invention is to provide a flexible cover of sheet steel, preferably steel, which will be inexpensive to form and of great'strength. n
Further objects of the invention in crowning the top and providing it with openings to the interior'of the tank will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are diagrammatic views illustrating the formation of a cover. Fig. 4: is a plan view of a cover embodying the invention, and
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the same. In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the cover is particularly adapted for a transformer tank of the ty e illustrated in my copending application i erial No. 386,115, filed June 2, 1920. In the formation of the cover a rectangular blank 10 of sheet steel is cut into circular form 11 (Fig. l) and then has one or more segmental portions 12 cut out of it from the circular edge to a point 13 spaced from the center.
The flat disk is then arched or crowned, as
by rolling for instance, till its form is convex on the exterior surface and concave on the interior surface and the edges of the cut 12 are brought together (Fig. 3). These edges are then clamped and tightly welded to retain the cover in arched form. This arched form strengthens and rigidities the structure and gives a pleasing crowned appearance to the transformer tank and also acts to shed rain and moisture. The crowning produced by the method of this invention gives an arch to the cover in all directions symmetrical about the axis of the tank and also symmetrical with relation to both the longiturli nal and transverse axis of the cover in case the latter is oblong or oval in form.
After this arching of the cover the centcr s then cut out for the circular man-bole 15 and holes 16 are also cut for the ends of the transformer lifting rods and holes 17 for the high tension leads. The rectangular opening 20 is also cut for the slab supporting the low tension leads and all of these openings are provided with fia nged extensions 21, 22, 28, 24, as shown, to serve as fastening means for bushings or parts covering the openings. These extensions are preferably welded in place and the edges of the opening 12 are also completely closed and welded at 25.
The edge of the cover has holes 26- for the clamp bolts fastening the cover onto the transformer tank body. Extensions 30 may be Welded in place overhanging the edge of cover and having openings 31 for upper ends of the lifting rods from the base on which the transformer tank sets. In assembled v, .BINGAY, onrmrseunerr," PENNSYLVANIA ASSIGNOR T0 PITTSBURGH position the transformer frame rods passing a through openings 16 have nuts turned to press upward on the under side of said cover so that the higher central portions of the cover are pressed upward while the lower edge portions are held downward bythe clamping t0 the tank body. The cupped or crowned shape of the cover adapts it to these stresses and also gives a strong arched shape and acts to shed moisture and ram.
The cover of this invention being of sheet steel is light in weight. and the method of formation by cutting from stock sheets is inexpensive and easily adapted to a variety of sizes and types of tanks. The finally completed cover while strong is at the same time flexible enough at the edges to accommodate itself to the top rim of the tank body.
While this invention has been illustrated in connection with a circular tank. it is adaptable also to tanks of other shapes. such as oval or angular. and the invention is not confined to the specific emlmdiment shown, but is intended to cover such modifications thereof as come within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A transformer tank cover comprising an integral plate of sheet steel of comparatively shallow dish shape haring'thc interior surface concave and the exterior surface convex giving 'an arched form to the body portion of the cover in all directions. and
I depth terminating an integral Plate of sheet steel having e se mental portion cut out and. the edges'of t e cut welded together and having the interiorsurface concave and the exterior surface convex giving an arched form to the body portion of the cover in ail directions, and having the edgesfiexible for adapting the under surface to fit the top rim of the transformer tank, the radial depth of the segmentel portion being less than the radial depth of the coverat' that point.
3. A, trensformer'tank cover comprising an integral piate of sheet steel having at central opening cut in the sheet and a flanged extension fastened thereto, and hav ing a segmental portion cut out to a radial short of said central ereeee o enin and the ed es of? the cut Welded together, the main body portion of the cover being of arched form in all direetions having its interioreurfece eeneeve and exterior surface convex, and having the edges flexi hie for edepting the under surface to fit the top rim of the transformer tank.
i. The method offorming e transformer tank cover from a steel sheet, coniprisiing cutting a eegment therefrom, bending the body portion of the sheet to give the interior surface a concave and the exterior: stir face a convex arched form in all direc tions and forcing the edges of the out to gather, end fastening said edges together,
