3 Claims.
This invention relates to metallic barrels, and it is particularly directed to a barrel having a double wall formation.
In such structures, considerable difficulty has been experienced heretofore in properly securing the filling bung fitting against the relatively severe blows to which it is subjected during the removal of the bung. The present barrel is provided with a reinforcing member or saddle for 10 spacing and providing mutual support for the inner and outer shells of the barrel, and it is organized with the head structure of the barrel to provide additionally an extremely sturdy support for the bung and adjacent structures.
The invention is more fully described in the accompanying specification and drawing, where- Fig. 1 is a front view of the barrel, a portion of which is taken in vertical section to show the assembly of the component parts;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the barrel with a portion of the outer casing broken away to show the underlying saddle structure;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The barrel I is formed of inner and outer pairs of cup shaped members or shells ll, Ila, and I2, [2a, which are flanged and joined at their open edges by a circumferential welding operation, as indicated by the numeral [3. The outer shells are additionally formed with chime portions I4, Ma, which encompass an upper head 15 and a lower head 16.
In order to support the unconnected ends of the shells, truss members or saddles l1 and 18 are interposed between them at the upper and lower ends of the barrel. The lower saddle l8 comprises a curved annular shape to fit the rounded corner of the underlying inner shell l2a and has an outer peripheral flange l9 engaging the wall of the shell Ha. A layer of heat insulating material 2| may be interposed between the shell I21; and the saddle l8.
The upper saddle I1 is a dish shaped member following the contour of the underlying head 22 of the inner shell I2, and thus it has a central substantially planar section 23 merging into a curved periphery 24, which in turn terminates in an annular flange 25 engaging the outer shell I l. Suitable insulating material 26 may be interposed between the saddle I1 and the shell 12 to prevent heat interchange therebetween.
The upper heads l and 22 and the saddle I! are formed with aligned openings 21, 28 and 29 respectively, which provide a mutual mounting means for a filling bung fitting 3|. The openings 27 and 28 are formed with annular lip portions 32 and 33 which extend toward each other and engage opposite sides of a shouldered flange 34 formed on the fitting 3!. The inner extremity of the fitting is provided with a shoulder 35 which is received in the opening 29. The fitting is welded in the three openings, as indicated by the numerals 36, 31 and 38. As an additional reinforcement, the section 23 of the saddle is provided with a channel shaped formation 39 extending partially around the fitting 3i and being welded to the head l5, as indicatedby the numeral 40.
It will be apparent that the supporting structure for the fitting 3| is capable of withstanding heavy shocks 'or blows without the previously encountered danger of crystallizing the metal adjacent to the inner and outer sealing Welds 36 and 38. The intermediate connection with the saddle I! not only adds another point of support, but the lip 33 thereof cooperates with the head lip 32 to clamp the fitting, Inasmuch as the blows of the bung starter are directed around the periphery of the fitting, the formation 39 protects and supports the head l5 against denting or rupture immediately adjacent the outer weld 36.
It is intended that the invention be utilized on numerous types of metallic barrels, and therefore it will be understood that various alterations within the scope of the following claims may be made without departing from the inventive concept.
I claim:
1. In a metallic barrel having inner and outer shells each formed with adjoining head portions on opposite extremities, a saddle portion interposed between the shells at each extremity thereof to space and support the shells, said adjoining head portions and the saddle member at one extremity of the barrel being formed with aligned openings, the openings in the said outer head portion and saddlehaving lip portions extending toward each other, a bung fitting mounted in the aligned openings and having an annular flange clamped between said lip portions, said bung fitting being welded to the contacting portions of the head and saddle member.

A metal barrel having spaced inner and outer shells and saddle members interposed between said shells to effect and maintain the spacing thereof, one of said saddles being of dish-shaped annular form and being secured to the inner side Wall of the outer shell and extending inwardly to contact the side wall of the inner shell and to lie in'the space between said 3. A metal barrel comprising spaced inner and o outer shells, said shells having side walls and contiguous end walls, aligned apertures formed in the end walls of the shells at one end of the, barrel, a. bung disposed in and secured to said apertures, said bung being formed with a shoulder on its inner end to engage around the aperture in the end wall of the inner shell, a flange formed on said bung at a point between said end walls, and a saddle member of dish-shaped annular form disposed between said end walls, said annular member being formed with an aperture in alignment with the aperatures in said end Walls, with a lip portion engaging said flange, and with a raised portion adjacent said lip to'engage and form a support for said end wall of the outer shell, said saddle being further formed with a. marginal portion engaging the side walls of the inner and outer shells.
