MONROE YOCKEY, OF MOUNT PLEASANT,
PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING TABLE.
Application filed April 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Roenn'r L. LEATHER- MAN and ARTHUR M. YOCKEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of \Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Folding Table, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements intables and the special object of our invention is to provide a household table so constructed that the same can be readily enlarged to twice its ordinary capacity.
Another object is to provide a table which can be compactly folded when not in use.
With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the in- 2 vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim. F
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise, structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section. Figure 2 is a bottom view of the table showing the top unfolded to its full capacity. Figure 3 is an end View showing the top as folded.
I Figure 4 is a section on lines 44 of Figure 1. Figure 5 shows a broken detail in perspective of a table corner. and a leg top.
Figure 6 is a modification of the manner of securing the legs. In carryin out the object of our invention we emp oy a four-sided frame comprising the two similar end members 1, 1, and the two side members 2, 2, connected at their ends as shown in Figure 5. At its upper edge the frame is connected by means of the centrally disposed panel 3, and near the lower edge by means of the lower end panel 4 and at the other end by means of the two draw supporting corner cleats or stub p nel thls construction being best one position while in Figure2 the leaves 1921. Serial No.459,401.
shown in Figure 2. Fixed to the central panel 3 near one edge is the bolt 6. which passes through the lug 7 shown in Figure l, the end of the bolt fitting into the socket 8 which is embedded in the lower table top 9, disclosed in Figure 4. Held to the top 9 by means of the hinges 10, 10 is the upper folding table top 11, of a length and width equal to the lower top 9.
In order to hold the tops 9 and 11 in proper position in both their open and closed positions, we employ a detent comprising the socket 12 embedded in the central panel 3 and through the bottom of which passes a bar 13 pivotally connected to the crank 14 held to the ear 15 shown in Figure 2, while connected to the lower end of the crank 14 is the operating rod 16 ending in .the finger loop 17 the outer end of the rod being supported by means of the eye 18 The bar 13 ends in thehead 19 arranged to work into a socket in the table leaf 9, a spring 10 urging the head in an outward direction.- In Figure 1 the leaves are shown as locked in are shown as locked in an open position.
Connecting the central panel 3 and the lower panel 4 is the end panel 19 thus forming a compartment accessible from above as shown in Figure 1, while supported in the two cleats 5, 5, is the table drawer 20 of conventional construction. Formed in each corner by means of the corners of the frame members 1 and 2 and a square opening a in the cleats 4 and 5 are sockets which receive the leg posts 22 as shown in Figure 5. These posts are formed in. the ends of the legs 23 by means of an L-shaped gain or slot, the slotsentering from the upper end, as shown in Figure 5.
As disclosed in Figure 4 tl1e legs'23 are hinged to the shelf board 24 by means of the hinges 25' so that when' the legs are withdrawn from the sockets the table can be compactly folded, when not in use.
In Figure 6 we show a modification in which the legs are hingedly connected at their upper ends to the tabletop.
From'the foregoing descnption, taken in connection with the accompanying draw- 105 ings, the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood.
We have entered into a somewhat detailed description of the present and preferred embodiment of our invention in order to 1m- 110 Ve do not desire, however, to be understood as restricting ourselvesto the exact construction shown and described, as various changes or modifications may be made in the form, size and minor details of construction without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. i. i
Having thus described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A folding table comprising a substantially rectangular frame provided with a substantially central horizontal transverse panel, and with a pair of spaced longitudinally extending drawer supporting panels at one end, said frame also having an open compart-ment at its other end; legs readily de tachably secured to and supporting said frame; a rectangular main top sectionv pivoted to said transverse panel for horizontal movement into a position either transversely or longitudinally of said frame, said section covering said compartment when in its longitudinal position and exposing the same when in its transverse position; a latch ,carried by said horizontal panel for engaging and maintaining said main top section in either position; means operable from adjacent the edge of said frame for releasing said latch; an auxiliary top section hinged to said main top section; and a shelf hinged to said legs, constituting a brace therefor.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures.-
ROBERT L. LEATHEBMAN. ARTHUR MONROE YOGKEY.
