Description

A. T. ROMAN FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKERS Filed Sept. 26. 1922 Yfii .0 zifiE fl avwewtoz A.TRoman Patented Nov, 20, 1923.
UNITED-STATES ANrnoN-r 'r. ROMAN, or NORTH BBOOKEIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOB, ROCKERS.
Application filed September 26, 1922. Serial No. 590,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY T. ROMAN, a citizen of Lithuania, residing at North Brookfield, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rockers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rocking chair attachments and its principal object is to provide a device for creating a cooling breeze during the rocking movement of the chair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device, which, when so desired, can be moved into an inoperative position so as to avoid annoyance to the occupant of the chair.
These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of an ordinary rocking chair showing the improved cooling device attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is asectional view taken through the fan head.
Figure 4 is a face view of the outlet openof the fan head. igure 5 is a detailed view of one of the air pump elements. p
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the seat of a rocking chair of ordinary construction, provided with the usual legs 11, having rockers 12 attached to the lower ends, their upper ends being connected to the seat.
Secured between the inner faces of the rockers 12, arebars 14 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 acting as guides for plunge-r rods 15 which form the active elements of the pumping means. I
The upper ends of these plungers are connected to the lower ends of the accordionlike tubular bellows 16,,the upper ends of each of which are connected by a tube 17 to the lower end of a fixed hollow post 18 attached to extend at one side of and above the seat 10.
Attached to opposite sides of the tubular post 18 are bent metal straps 19 forming the Supporting elements of a gimbal joint fork, pivotally carrying a head 20, the same being a short hollow cylinder, having a conical extending hollow casing 21 terminating in a circular band 22 open at its outer end.
A spindle 23 extends axially through the cylinder and casing and rigidly fixed on the spindle is a. helically bladed fan 24: positioned to receive the air direct from the open end of the hollow post'18 and be rotated by the current therefrom.
At the outer end of the spindle 23 is a fan 25, rotatable by the blast as received by the fan 2etand delivering the air current to a person using the chair in a manner that will be well. understood.
Rods 26, attached to the cylinder 20, extend thru the casing and carry crossed guard rods 27 arranged at their intersections to support the spindle as at 28.
Coiled tension springs 29, attached respectively below the seat and outer ends of the bellows 16, tend to hold the latter in a retracted position-and coiled compression springs 30 encircle the rods 15 to aocomplish a similar purpose.
In use it will be seen that as the chair rocks forward, the front pumping element will be compressed so as to force the air contained in the bellows into the tubular post 18.
During this movement, the rear bellows are being extended so that when the chair reaches its limited position in the forward direction, and starts'on its return, the rear bellows will be compressed and the air previously therein is forced into the tube 17 and thenceto the post 18.
Obviously a continued movement of the chair will cause a steady flow of air out of themouth of the distributing head thereby creating a cooling efi'ect upon the occupant of the chair.
While certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof, maybe made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claim hereto "appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a rocking chair fork on said post, a circularQcasinggpivoted 5 in said fork, a shaft revoluble in said casing,
extending towards the rear of the chair,
a fan fixed on: one endof said shaft adapted to be actuated by air passing through said tubular post, and a conical extension on said casing concentric with, said shaft, the base of saidconical extension being, directed out- Wardly.
ln witness whereof I affix my signature.
- a ANTHONY T. ROMAN.
