Description

PATENVT'EDFEB. 18, 1908. H. P. GLEMETSON.
Harig Pea're www HARRY PERCE CLEMETSON, OF-SHFORD, 'ENGLAND CHAIRJSED, ooUcH, s'rzssromss, etc.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1s, 1908.
Application filed August 12. 1905 Serial No. 273.885.
To all tollem tt may concern:
Be it known theft l, HARRY EARGE CLEM- n'rsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and ireland, residing at 9 North street, Ashford, in the count f, of Kent, England, have invented new an useful lm rovernents in Ghair-l3eds, Couches, Stretc ers, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairbeds, couches, stretchers and the like in which the seat and beck are hinged together and are vso supported that the user can adjust their l,inclination by simply moving the body. In such chair-beds and the like the freine of the back has commonly been supported by being pivoted to the stationary frame or by being pivoted to and su ported by more or less vertical bars the ow'er ends oi' which are pivoted to the france so that the u per ends of the bsrsare free to sway to and) fro with the movement of the beck.
According to this` invention, I in some cases adopt the latter arrangement, but, instead oi pivoting the front of the seat to the freine ss before, I rigidly iiX the front legs to it and pivot the bottom of these legs to the treme. in other cases I supoort the pivots of the freine of the back on rollers running on guides in e similar manner to that which has before been adopted vfor the fronts of the,
seats.
ln'iny British specification No. 13563 of i903 .l describe a method ol" obtaining the proper balance of the chair or the likeby having the back to the rear ol theA pivots on which it is supported. According to the present invention I obtain the desired result by placing the pivots connecting the trarne et the back and seat to the rear of the back or below the sect or both. ln order also to obtein a better balance and to revent the body 'from being pinched when a tering the angle between the back and seat l do not festen the continuous fabric forming the back and seat to the lower part oi the side bars ofthe beck but leave the fabric free to. bag. The saine result can be obtained., but 'not sov advantageously by allowing the rear ol the seat to bag 1n a similar niann'cn'or both the this hinge and be free to bag.
The mzc-onipnnying drawing shows a side elcvetion of a. bed-couch constructed accorde to this invention.
seat and back may lw'left-uniastened about tion.
a is the bedsteedy 0r stationary frame, b is the frame of the back, c the seat, and d the leg rest, which are pivoted together atib and c. The frame of the back b is pivoted to and supported by sway bars e, one on each side, which are pivoted to it at e and to the frame o at el". The iront of the seat has rigidly fixed to it legs j, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the frame atf. The leg rest d has pivoted to it and is supported by a knuckle-jointed link g pivoted at g to the frame. The positions of the partswhen the bed is laid out :llat are shown in dotted lines. The back` may be lelt free to be moved by the user or it may be retained in any position in thefol lowing manner :me3 is a cross ber free -to turn in holes in the two swayibars and it has fixed 'to its two ends levers h carrying rollers h free to run in slots in the links y' pivoted to the seat c. The upper side ol the 'slot has recesses formed in it to receive the cross bar e3. By raising either of the levers h., the links are also raised and the cross bar .isfreed so 'that the back can be inoyed'int-o any posi/ On releasing the leve1;,tlie links j fall again and hold the cross bar. ltwill be seen that the lower part ofn the materia-l Z1, formin r the beck not fastenedto the side hars but is allowed to bag at h3.:
. l/Vhut .l claim as luy invention to secure by .Letters Patent is :Je
1. Au adjustable chair-bed, stretcher or the like consisting in combination of a mattrcss frame composed ol sont, liaclqalid log sections hinged together, a rigid frame, a pair of sway bars pivoted :it one end toss-id rigid freine and :it their vother ends to said back section at thc point oiequipoise, legs rigidly connected to the iront end of the seat section and pivotcd upon said rigid frame, and a @air oi' knuckle-jointod links pivoted mthe one ,hand to sind rigid frame and on the other to said leg section, substantially es described.
2. Au adjustable chairebrd, stretcher or `the like consisting in coinbinetionof t mat-v tress freine composed of seat, back, :ind leg sections hinged togetlun, a' rigid freine?, n. pair 'of sway bers pivotcd at one end-to said rigid' frame' and at their other ends to said 'back I section at the 'point of cquipoise, nicans for rctainii'igsaid back section in anv, desired position, legs rigidly connected tof'the `front 'end et the sent section and pivoted upon seid rigid treme, end s. pen' et knuckle-301mm.
, said rigid irzm1e,and apairof knuckle-jointed links pivoted 0n the one hand to said rigid frame and on the other to said leg section,- substantaliy as described.
3. iniadjustabie ehsiir-bed, stretcher 01"; the like Consisting in combina-tion of a matl trees iframe composed of seat, backend leg-- sections hinged together, L rigid frame, the said beek section supported at the point of equipoise, legs rigidly connected to the frontends of the seat section and pivoted upon the I links pivoted on the one hand t0 said rigid fran'ie, and on the other to said leg seetlon l substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 1-5 name to lchis speeiiieation in the presence of two subcribing Witnesses.
