JACOB THOMAS, 015' SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
VALVE CONTROLLING OR LOCKING MEANS.
Application filed June 28,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB P. THoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Controlling or Locking Means, oi which the following a specification.
This invention relates to a valve controlling or locking means for a petcocl; car ied upon the transmission casing of an automobile such as an automobile ot the Ford type.
Another object or this invention is the production of a simple and eiiicien't locking means for holding the pe'tcock in a closed position and preventing the same tron) jarring open.
Other objects and :ulvantages ot' the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the automobile showing the petcock locking means applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View through a portion of the automobile, show ing the locking means for the petcock.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the struc ture shown in Figure 2.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the auto mobile of any suitable or desired character r design. which supports the usual transmission casing 2. The usual form or petcock 3 is mounted upon the transmission casin 2 and the usual turning or l nger grip 4- is carried thereby. An operating rod 5 is pivotally connected to the finger grip or operating key l, and the outer end of the rod 5 carries a pivotally connected operating blade 6. This operating blade 6 is adapted to be swung into and out of the knife clamp 7, which clamp is secured to the running board as indicated at 8 by means of a suitable clamping nut 9. The knife clamp 7 comprises a pair of clamping jaws 10, between which clamping jaws 10 is adapted to be swung the operating blade 6.
By considering Figure 2 of the drawings it will be seen that by swinging the blade 6 out of engagement with the knife clamp 7, the rod 5, which extends through the aperture 11 formed in the runing board, may be 1922. Serial No. 571,384.
rotated for the purpose of opening the drain cock 3. In this way it will be seen that it is unnecessary for the operator of the car to climb under the car in order to operate the drain. cock. It will be further understood that a very simple and efiicicnt means has been produced for locking the drain cock in closed position, thereby preventing the drain cock from being accidently jarred to an open position.
It should be further understood that. certain detailed changes in mechanical construction may be employed in the present device without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
hat is claimed is:
1. In combination with a petcock having an operating key, of an operating rod pivotally connected to the key, an operating blade pivotally connected to the outer end of the rod, and a knife clamp adapted to rcceive the blade and hold the rod in a set position against rotation.
2. In combination with a petcocli of the class described, provided with an operating key, of an operating rod, the operating rod being adapted to extend through the running board of an automobile an operating blade pivotally connected to the outer end of the rod, a clamp adapted to be supported in engagement with the running board of an automobile and adapted to receive the operating blade when the same is swung downwardly into engagement with the clamp for 100 ring the rod against rotation.
As a new article of manufacture, an operating device for valves comprising an elongated operatin rod, means formed on one end of the rod for engaging a valve stem, a flat blade pivot-ally secured to the outer end of the operating rod, and a resilient knife clamp rigidly secured below the operating rod and in the path of the operating blade, when the rod is in one position whereby the blade can be moved into engagement with the resilient clamp and the rod held against accidental rotation.
In testimony whereoi I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB P. THOMAS. lVitnesses ELAINE THOMAS, Gno. D. SMITH.
