To all LU/LONL it may concern Be it known that l, MICHEAL J. KIGKHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a faucet of improved construction in which the valve is held to its seat by the expansion of a spring, and is adapted to be opened by a quarter turn of a handle in either direction, and in such manner that when the valve is in fully opened position, it will be securely held in such position by the action of the spring.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, showing the faucet as closed.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, and showing the faucet open.
Fig. 4L is a detail section taken through the stem of the faucet in a plane below the cam member on said stem, and showing the under side of the said cam member.

Among other elements the faucet co1nprises a casing 1 having a spout 2. The upper end of the casing is closed by a bonnet 3 and appropriate packing means 4. Interiorly the casing 1 is provided with a valve .seat 5, cam portions 6 and diametrically opposite stops 7. The valve seat 5 is located between the induction end of the casing 1 and the spout 2, and immediately adjacent to the latter, and the cam portions 6 are arranged above and immediately adj acent to the spout 2. Each of the said cam portions 6 has a beveled or inclined upper surface 8,

as best shown in Fig. 5. As will be noted by reference to Fig. 5, the stops 7 are arranged d ametrically opposite each other and are disposed in horizontal plane slightly above the cam portions I The valve 9 of the faucet is carried by a stem 10 on which is a handle 11. The said stem 16 is equipped at 12 with a cam disk, the cam portions 13 of which are spaced apart and beveled correspondingly to the inclined or beveled surfaces 8 of the cam portions 6. On the said cam disk 12 is a radial stud 14, designed to bring up against one of the stops 7 and thereby limit the movement of the stem about its axis to a quarter turn, irrespective of the direction in which the said stem 10 is turned.
Interposed between the inner end of the bonnet 3 and the cam disk 12 is a coiled spring 15, the function of which is to yieldngly though strongly hold the valve 9 to its seat, and to hold the cam disk 12 un or pressure against the cam portions 6 when the valve is unseated.
lVitlrthe valve fully seated or closed as shown 1n Fig. 1, it will be apparent that when the handle 11 is turned from the posi tion shown in Fig. 1 to a position at right angles to that shown, the valve 9 will be opened and will be retained in the open position. This will be better understood when it is stated that immediately after the initlal movement of the stem 10 about its axis, the intermediate diametrical portion 12* of the cam disk 12 will act against the cam portions 6 until the said diametrical' portion 12 is at right-angles to the length of the cam portions 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Manifestly the said movement of the cam disk 12 will be attended by upward movement of said disk 12 together with said stem 10 and the valve 9, and in consequence the spring 15 will be compressed so that by strongly pressing the ends of the diametrical portion 12 against the cam portions 6, the valve 9 will be secured in its open position. To close the faucet, the operation described is reversed-c. 6., the handle 11 is moved through a quarter of a circle from the position shown in Fig. 8 to that shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the spring 15 in expanding will strongly close and hold the valve 9 in the closed position, and at the same time will retain the cam disk 12 in the position shown in Fig. 1, relatively to the cam portions 6.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A faucet of the type described comprising a casing havin a spout at an int-erniediate point of its length and also having interiorly a valve seat at one side of the spout and opposite earn portions at the other side of the spout, said casing further having interior diametrically opposite stops the opposite sides of the cam portions and on opposite sides of the spout, removable means normally closing one end of the casin a stem journaled and movable rectilinearly in said means and having at an intermediate point of its length a cam disk provided with a radial stud on its periphery and opposite spaced apart inclined surfaces at its inner side and also provided between said surfaces at its inner side with a diametrical portion for cooperation with the cam portions of the casing a valve on said stem and opposed to the valve seat, a handle also on the stem, and a spring surrounding the etc and housed in the casing and interposed between the said closure means and the cam disk on the stem.
2. The combination in a faucet, of a casing having a spout and also having an interior valve seat and opposite interior cam portions, closure means removably arranged in one end of the casing, a stem movable about its axis and endwise in said closure means, a valve on the stem and opposed to the valve seat, a handle also on the stem, a cam disk carried by the stem and having opposite spaced apart inc-lined surfaces at its inner side and also having between said surfaces at its inner side an intermediate,
