GARMENT POCKET.
Application filed August 20, 1919. Serial No. 318,702.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES R. Mormrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of 6 Illinois, haveinvented certain new and use? ful Improvements in Garment Pockets, of which thefollowingis a description, reference being hadto the accompanyingv drawf t pocket.
An object ofthe invention is to form a garment pocket wherein the edge portions of the fabric sections are rmly secured by stitches, andthe edges thereof covered by covering stitches, the securing stitches and covering stitches being inde endent of each other and the securing stitc es sodisposed as to protect the covering stitches from strain incident to the contents of the pocket. In the drawings, which show by way ot illustration one embodiment ot the invention Figure l is a front view of a section of a garment showing a portion of a pocket having aeseam made in accordance with the lnventlon.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line :uw of Fig-*1;
Fig. 4c is a sectional view on the line y-y of Fig. 1l; Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of a portion, ot the seam tor uniting the edges of the fabric;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the same; and.
. Fig. 7 is a view showing, more or less diagrammatically and on an enlarged scale,
1 a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 6.
The invention consists broadly 1n a garforming the same are joined adjacent their edges vby means oit a line ot stitches such as y double-locked stitches, wherein g the edgesA 'y @outside of the joiningil line ot stitchesare secured and covered y covering' stitch. The line, of double-locked stitches is independent olf the covering stitches and re? locked stitches are spaced from and ried in the pocket. The covering stitches are disposed wholly outside of the doublelocked stitches and are therefore protected by said double-locked stitches.
In the drawings I have shown a garment pocket embodying the improvements.
A section of a garment is indicated at l. The pocket opening 2 is formed in the usual manner. The inner face of the garment at the pocket opening is provided with a facing strip 3. The pocket is preferably formed ofxa fabric section, indicated at 4, which is folded at 5, so as 'to' form an inner section 6 and an outer section 7. The edge of the inner section 6 passes beneath the facing strip 3 along side of the pocket opening 2. Also along side of the pocket o ening 2 is a, facing strip 8. 'Ihe edges o the sections 6 and 7, except at the pocket opening, are joined by a line of double-lockedY stitches 9. 4 f
As shown in Figure 7 of the drawings, these stitches 9 are in the form oit' doublelocked stitches and are made from 'a needle thread l0 which is formed into loops ll which are locked by means oit a looper thread l2 formed into locking loops ,13.
This double-locked stitch is of the 4usual.
` joined and locked by a looper thread 17. @n
the upper face ot the fabric .the needle thread loops are joined by a cross thread 18.
These threads form covering stitches which i completely cover and protect the edges oit the sections of the Yfabric. The doubleparallel with the covering stitches.
As above noted, the line ot double-locked stitches lie inside oit the covering stitches, and, thereitore,the strain du@J to heavy artt, cles placed in the `pocket comes directly upon the line of double-locked stitches which is not liable to break and, it it does break', will notravel. This line of stitches protects the covering stitches yso that no tot strain whatever comes upon the coverhig stitches.
-overseaming stitches, and, therefore, in such seam the strain will come first upon the `overseaming'stitching, as such is shown and described in the patent to Fefel, No.
407,286, granted July 16, 1889, and I do not. 'claim vsuch combination broadly. thfis patent, however, the` straightl line of stitching vkis within and 'enclosedby the overseaming stitches, which wouldbe likely to break, thus releasing .the covering threads 'and making the searnunsight'ly- By my improved searn, however, the overedge or covering stitches are. completely protected by the line of double-locked stitches and nol strain whatever comes on the covering 'or overedge stitches which would likely rup-v ture and caiisegthe seam to ravel.
It is obvious' that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departingfrom the spirit of the invention as set forth-in the appended claim.
l Having thus described the invention,what
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi
A garment pocket comprising inner and outer fabric portions shaped to form a pocket, the free edges of said inner and outer portions being independently vjoined y tothe garment at the vpocket opening, said free edges being united throughout the reniainderl of their extent by covering stitches and-a line of double locked stitches disposed at a greater distanceffrom the edges of the fabric portions than the innermost part of the covering stitches and substantially parallel therewith.
lIn, testimony whereof, I aiix my signa ture.
AMES R. MOFFATT.
