- a l cation-tiedSe tember 17;;192'0. seiiai-noi'noisis.-'E 1 My invention relates to a system file, theprimary object of which is to provide means for collectively holding correspondence consisting of letters and: other papers in a col:
lapsible file concealed in a neatand tidy manner so that instead of the oflice desk be- .ing mussed-up with papers they can be held together in an adjustable file under. aparticular index readily accessible-when desired. I
p The invention consists of filing means which is collapsible into a fiat'thin state when empty, primarilydesigne'd to he used in connection'with an oflice desk and having self-adjusting means to various thicknesses to accommodate letters andpapers beneathseparate sheets in a file which isadapted .to hold the'same collectively. This means of keeping correspondence papers upon which immediate" action is'desired affords .a very d'esirablefoflice utility and has a tendency to systematize the routine of WOIk of the user. A file of this nature is adapted'torece'ive considerable use'anda featurejof the inveiit on ism providing avery substantial manner in securing the-dividing sheets to the main back of the file'so thatthe strain' either from pulling "directly against the 's'heets or the wear of folding the sheets over on their hinged-edge Will not loosen the sheets'from the back, which would'very likely happen unless the'sheets were attachedyin thepeculiar manner in which I have illustrated in myinvention. i: It is essential iSO'PIOVIClE a substantial file,

The label holder 16 is attached in a suitable manner to the corners of eiaxch sheet and to the cover of the system file f r The sheets 10 have their free ends covered with a piece of leather 19 or other suitable Well wearing material to protect these ends which receive a good deal of wear by handling and when the file is in use the free ends of the sheets project one below the other in consecutive order sothat the ends of each sheet is exposed from beneath the end of the cover 14. This is true of the sheet even when the file is in use with papers between the same, as the portion 12 tends to extend on a slant and thus expose the free ends of the sheets. V
Each of the sheets 10 are formed with a series of oppositely projecting tongues 20 and 21 respectively, which are glued or otherwise attached to the inner surface of the portion 12 to securely'attach the sheets in the file. By this peculiarconstruction any direct pull on the sheets 10 is transmitted to either side of the hinged edge 22 of each of the sheets, thus venly distributing the strain on either side of the'sheet and tending to form a strong attaching means for the sheets. The tongues 20 and 21 mesh with each other as illustrated in Figure 3 so as to give a flat engaging-attaching means at the hinge of each sheet and prevent bulging of the sheets at the hinging point when the file is folded or collapsed.
lVhen the system file A is in use it simulates a parallelepiped in shape as is illustrated in Figure 2. The file at all times adjusts itself in accordance with the thickness of the materialinserted between the leaves of the same. It never tends to bulge pt the top where the leaves are hinged and secured together. The member 12 adjusts the position of the separatingleaves 10 due tothe hinging of the same along the edge 13 of the back 11.
The separating sheets 10 are equally spaced apart and attached to thehead portion 12 of the file A. V This construction permits them to be self, or automatically adjustable when material is inserted between hem up t the max m sp e of separa tion between the points of their attachment,
. thus papers can be inserted in the file A without'bulging the'sheets at the hinging point up to the thickness of the space separating the sheets from the back and adjustble hea po n V I In accordance with the patentstatutes I ha d scrib d t e prin p of per tion of my inventica ose lier ith.v the con truc ion, wh h be e eto b th bes embodiment h reof, but Id re o have .it understood that the invention may be applied to other are folded together, a series of separating sheets, and means extending from either side of said sheets along one edge thereof adapt ed to hingedly attach said sheetsto said interposed member in a manner to secure said 7 sheets on either side of the line ofhinging thereof to securely hold them to said back.
2. A self-adjusting file including afront and back portion, a member hinged to and interposed between said front and back-portion, aseries of separating sheets, attaching tongues formed integral with and extending from either side along one edge of said 7 sheets adapted to attach'said sheetsto said interposed member with said tongues extending in the same plane.
3. A self-adjusting file comprising, a front member, a back member, an ad usting member interposed between said front-and back member and hingedly secured thereto, a series of separating sheets and a series of attaching tongues projecting from said sheets, adapted to hingedly attach said sheets to said adjusting member, said attaching tongues being adapted tointermesh to form a comparatively flat attachment with said adjusting member.
