To all whom may concern i I.
. -Be; it known-thatl, Jnssn D, Tucnnii, a
citizen of the v United "States, fresiding' at Y Sacramento,-county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and}:
useful Improvements in Spoke-Tightening Shim Drifts; and I, do declare the following to be a full, clear, and, exact description ofthe same, reference being had tothe ac- 10 companying drawings; and to the characters of. reference marked thereon, which form a part of this'application.
This invention relates to in connection with the placingof the spoketightening shims or washers insertable betweenv the felly and spokes ;of a wooden wheel, such shims being preferably of the type shown in my Patent No, 1,411,391, dated April 4th, 1922. i 7 The principal object of my. invention is to provide 'artool to engage, the shim, and by. means of which saidshim may be quickly and easily driveninto position, with a minimum of manualhandling on the shim on the part of the operator. 5 1
A further object of the invention is to produce a. simple and inexpensive, device and yet one which will beexceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed, These objects I accomplishby means of such structure'and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of ref-7.
3 erence indicate corresponding parts in the several views: i V Fig. lis a perspective view of the ,improved form of the drift, showing the same engaged with ashim, I Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are similar views of modified forms. of the shim drift.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the shank of the tool, of circular or polygonal cross section as may be desired, which is flattened and widened on one end as at 2. The outer edge or face of this flat portion, which lies substantially in a plane at right anglesto the shank, iscurved concavely as at 3 on aradius equal to that of the shim 4 to be engaged.
The foregoing arrangement and general 7 design is commontoall the forms of the device shown. 7 In the. type shown in Fig. 1, the portion- 'ia .s eia' t aa re eii w s 5,1 setback fromgthe edge :3 e a certain" dis-.
a tool to be used outer edge '3 is engaged with the shimlto little if any thicker than theshim itself, as. is necessarypsince'when the shim is 'defi v I1 1952;] seri l netamiss tance, the;facejo f which is curved .th ame h uter':.fa The type in; ig 2, "also1 aisim larly disposed and curved ledge onshoulder I53) but the faceofthis ledge isi'cut at acute angle w t he por i n e t n z h ebey asshq n ab fi ndi'so -tq fre ks a V Y h i .PQ t :I.1. Vifiththese; two "types,;' in the1nitial seta ting of the shim, the ledgefis engagedwithl the periphery of the shim, the tool, being held in alineme'nt and engagement therewith by reason of the projecting portion of the end 2therebeyondythe engagement thushad f ,beingsomewhatfirmerwith theitype shown I in Fig. 2 'thanwith that shown in Fig.- 1, owingto' the wedging of the shim-edge into the angle formed between the'ledge 5 and has been driven in 'a certain distanceytheij completethe operation, this edge "being but nitely located the rim thereof is al'ined with i the periphery of it'sspokeiand overhungsbyjj; i
the felly. v e r In the type shown in Fig.3, thele'dge is f and relatively thin curved-edge portion 7,:
said edge; being straight and at right angles i to the axial plane ofthe tool. P
In Fig. 1,;the single thiclmessl end 1 maintained," but the transverse edge" thereof 'is formedas an angled orecirculargroove;-
as shown at 8,,the latter form of course 'giv-i ing a better engagement with the shim than; the straight edged; type.
readily seen that I have produced' such a device as substantially fulfills the Objects of the inventionas .set forth herein.
f 'While this specification "sets fbrth indeQ'I tail the present and preferred construction of the device, still-in practice such deviations 7 from such detail .may-beresorted tofas do I claims. y Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew and useful and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is: v 1.'A-d1ift for-driving spoke tightening the outer end of thetool. Whenthe-shim1 8'57 omitted, and the end isformed asfa-single *TL 5 i .From the'foregoing description it will be I V 1,
shims comprising a shank having a rela tively thin flattened end Whose outer edge extends transversely of the shank, said edge being concavely curved on a radius substantially the same as that ofa shim to be engaged thereby and having substantially the same thickness.
2. A drift for driving spoke tightening shims comprising a shank having a flattened end Whose outer edge extends transversely of the shank',sai d edge being concavely curved on a radius substantially the same as that of a shim to'be engaged thereby and having substantially the same thickness, and
l a ledge upstanding from said flattened end a certain distance from the outer edge there of, said ledge having the same curvature and in the same direction as said outer edge and similarly disposed relative to the shank.
3. A drift for driving spoke tightening shims comprising a shank having a flattened end Whose outer edge extends transversely of the shank, and a ledge upstanding from said flattened end a certain distance from said outer edge having a similar shape as 7 said edge and being similarly disposed relative to the shank.
4. A drift for driving spoke tightening shims comprising a shank having a flattened said outeredge having a similar shape as said edge. and belng SlIIlllflI'ltYCllSPOSQCl relative to the shank, the heights of said end edge and ledge being substantially equal to the thickness of a shim to be engaged thereby.
