Be .it .known that I, HENRY E. .PELLETIER, a citizen :of the United States, residing .at Clarlrsburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented cer- :tain new .and :useful Improvements in Nut Locks, of which the following is aspecifica- =tion, reference being had .to-the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvementsin nut locks and it is an objectzofthe invention to .provide novel and improved means whereby a nut, when applied to-the abolt, .is held against retrograde' movement and particularly as may be occasioned by vibration. Y
It is-alsoan objectof the invention toprovide novel and improved means of this generalcharacter which-operates to advantage in the properma'intenance of the nut upon the bolt but which can be easily rendered inoperative orineifective when it is desired toremove the nut. V I
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination andarrangement of the several parts of .my improved-nut lock whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device trenderedsimpler, less expensiveand otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will [be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The :novel features of my invention will hereinafter -bedefinitely claimed.
In order that myeinvention may be the better understood, I -will;now proceed to describe thesame with-reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure .1 is a view in elevation illustrating' .a nut lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the holding or retaining member unapplied' As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a bolt provided with a plurality of circumferentially disposed grooves 1 intersecting a' thread 2 thereof, each of said grooves being of a ratchet type. Associated with the bolt B in a conventional manner is the nut N.
The nut N is provided on .one side with a transversely disposed aperture 3 in communication with the 'bore thereof. Communicatlng wlth the outer-portion of the opening 3 is a groove or channel 4 produced in the outer face of said side provided with the opening 3. Thisgroove or channel 4has its outer end 1n communicatlon wltha groove or channel 5 p.rovided in :the adjacent facets or substantially in a direction transverse of thebore of the nut, both of said grooves or channels 4 and 5 being disposed longitudinally of the associated facet. outer end of the groove or channel .6lbeing open. 7 The holding or retaining member is formed from. a. single Yblank of material possessmg a certain degree of inherent resiliency, and said member comprising theanguwardl -y directed arm .9 which, when the member M is in applied position, .is disposed through the opening 3 and is radapted to engage within a groove 1 whereby the applied nut .N is efiectively held against retrograde turning-movement with respect to-;the bolt B yet permitting requisite turning .movement of. the :nutN in :the opposit direction. v
The outer end portion of thearm 8. of'the member M is continued by a laterally ;dis- .posed .arm 10 which is adapted to be received, when the member M-is applied, withinfthe groove or channel 6, .said'. arm l0-being :of a length toextend beyond the-outer or open end of said groove or channel 6 so that when it is desired to release the nut N for retrograde rotation relative to the bolt larly related arms 7 and 8 adapted to be received withinthe grooves 4 and 5 respectively. The arm 7 is continued by an inof the nut N to readily facilitate its entir i 10 removal from the nut N. This constitutes an important feature of the present invention as with the member M entirely removed the nut N may be turned upon the bolt B without hinderance or obstruction with any type of wrench or kindred tool. During the period the nut N is being applied to the bolt B, the member M may be unappiied. When the nut has been properly adjusted the member M is then forced into working position upon the nut N although an applied member M will offer no hinderance or obstruction to the application of the nut. If the member M is not applied during the setting operation of the nut N it is placed in position upon substantially proper adjustment of the nut and if the opening 3 is not in position to permit the arm 9 to engage within a groove 1 further turn may be given to the nut N with the applied member M to effect such interengagement.
The grooves or channels f and 5 are of such depth that when the member M is in applied position the arms 7 and 8 of said member M are entirely confined or housed within said grooves or channels so that no obstruction is olfered by the applied member to a socket wrench or other tool which may be employed in applying the nut to the bolt B and this is of particular advantage in connection with automobiles or other work where the bolt is positioned at a place not conveniently accessible.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a nut lock constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In a nut locking device, a bolt having a groove extending therealong, a nut engageable with the bolt, said nut having an opening disposed through a side thereof and in communication with the bore thereof, the
periphery of the nut being provided with a groove in communication at one end with the opening and disposed in a direction transversely of the opening, the opposite end of said groove being continued by an angularly disposed groove opening through an end face of the nut, a holding member adapted to seat within the peripheral groove of the nut and having an arm at one end insertible through the opening of the nut for engagement within the groove of the bolt and also with an arm extending within the open groove of the nut, said'second arm being of a length to terminate beyond the face of the nut through which said second groove opens when the locking member is applied, said extended portion of the second amed arm providing means for disengaging the holding member from the nut.

In a nut locking device, a bolt having a groove extending therealong, a nut engageable with the bolt, said nut having an opening disposed through a side thereof and in communication with the bore thereof, the periphery of the nut being provided with a groove in communication at one end with the opening and disposed ina direction transversely of the opening, the opposite end of said groove being continued by an angularly disposed groove opening through an end face of the nut, a holding member adapted to seat within the peripheral groove of the nut and having an arm at one end insertible through the opening of the nut for engagement within the groove of the bolt and also with an arm extending within the open groove of the nut, said second arm being of a length to terminate beyondthe face of the nut through which said second groove opens when the locking member is applied, said extended portion of the second named arm providing means for disengaging the holding member from the nut, the opening through the side of the nut being of a diameter to permit swinging movement of the first named arm in a direction transverse to the bore of the nut to facilitate the application and removal of the holding member.
