Description

UNrTED STATEs PATENT OFFICEo FRANK G. HUNT, OF BUFFALO, NEYV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKBOARDS.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,267, dated February 10, 1874 3 application filed April 9, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK GARDNER HUNT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have made new and useful Improvements in Blackboards, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to boards with slate or colored surfaces for the use of schools, academies, 83e.; and the invention consists in providing a series of blackboards sliding up and down in a vertical frame with suitable grooves therefor. v
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view.
A A represent the two uprights of the frame; B, the top piece; and G C', the feet on which the whole stands, and in which casters are set to move or turn the frame around. The insides of the uprights A A are provided with grooves, or their equivalents, in which slide vertically a series of boards, a a a, with slate or dark-colored surfaces for chalking numbers, examples, musical illustrations, &c., as is common in schools and similar places. The upper board, I), as in the drawings, is left white, or it will have a light-tinted surface for the better use of charcoal, crayons, &c., for illustrations in drawing, &e. One or more of the boards can be so left, if desired. The outer edges of the frames of these boards will be provided with rollers or knobs set at proper distances apart to slide in the grooves of the uprights A A', to keep the frames and grooves from binding in case of the wood warping. Then the boards are all down side by side in the frame, to keep them from being rubbed, and from dust, I provide a protecting piece,
I), one on each side of the frame A, and fastened thereto, as shown in Fig. l., or it may swing open. To raise the boards, I attach a ring or eye, e e, to the top of each, and by means of a hook, d, on the end of a cord, c, which passes through the center of the top piece B, and over pulleys ff, each board .is raised as high as wanted, and held there by means of pins or their equivalents, g g, set in the outside of the frame A. The cord is fastened onto the pin by means of an eye or ring, h, as shown. An ornamental piece or design, E, will be arranged on top of the piece B, as Shown, or of any desired form.
The front of the protecting piece D may also be ornamentcd, (see Fig. 1,) or have the name of the school or institution on it, making a handsome addition to the frame, if desired.
I am acquainted with folding and swinging blackboards, but never have seen duplicate boards, or a series of boards, sliding in an upright frame, or possessing the advantages of economy of space and comparative cheapness of construction which mine unites.
I claim- 'lhe portable frame A B, provided with the series of vertically-sliding' blackboards a a., when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. e. HUNT.
Witnesses J. R. DRAKE, C. D. SWAN.
