IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,1 I3, dated February 3, 1874 application filed January 26, 1874i To all whomlit may concern.
Be it known thatI, NATHAN K. ELLswonTII, of the city and county of lVashington,` in the District of Columbia, havevinventcd a new and useful Improvement in rlools, or combined wrench, rule, screw driver, hammer, boxopener, and nail-drawer; andI do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of the improved tool. Fig. 2 is aside view ofthe head with the base broken away, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view-through linear .1: of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference in the accom panying drawing indicate the same parts.
The object of this invention is to combine in one simple, cheap, and convenient instrument a wrench which shall lit various sizes of nuts, a screw-driver, hannner, box-opener, nail or tack drawer, and a rule; and to this end the invention consists in the improved instrument,
constructed as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing', A represents a tapering bar of fiat metal, from which is cut out the slot or opening S, extending nearly the whole length of the bar, and gradually decreasing in width to within a short distance from the end, thus forming the two inclined bars H B, which form the handle of the tool By this construction a wrench is formed which can be applied to nuts of various sizes by inserting the latter in the slot or opening S. The lower extremity of the bar is beveled on each side to form a screw-driver, as seen at C in the drawing; The bar H is lgraduated to form a. rule, as plainly seen in the drawing. On the upper side of the bar is cut out a set of claws for the purpose of drawing tacks or nails, and I) represent-s aha-miner on the opposite side of the instrument. A claw, F, is also formed at the upper end, which forms a box-opener. The under side of the shank O of the hammer-head is rounded and raised above the lower face, so as to form a fulcrmn in the application of the box-opener, and at the same time give greater strength to the tool. The tool is preferably made of malleable iron and case-hardened, or it can be made of steel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, the tool, substantially as and for the purposes described.
