'Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a front elevation of the improved journal-box, shown connected with the crank-pin, which appears in section, and showing a portion of the pitman. Fig. L. is a longitudinal section on line a# af of Fig. 1, the crank-pin or journal being removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable half of the journal-box re` moved, showing' the arrangement of the overlapping-lip, and Fig. l is a like view of the wedge.
As shown in the drawing, A is the hollow or partially-open case, at the end of which is formed the fixed half c c of the journal-box A C, and the other end secured to the pitman B. An inclined partition or web, b, is formed across the case at any convenient point, or it may be formed by brackets on either side to form shoulders for the wedge D, and in the space between this and the fixed half e e of the journalbox, the wedge D, and the movable half G ofthe box, are inserted. The spring E is secured within the hollow case at the end opposite the box by a screw or rivet, j', as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where it is secure from blows or other injuries, and its opposite end passes through an opening provided in the partition b, and enters a slot, g, Figs. 2 and 4, in the wedge, or it may rest on a projection of the wedge. The latter is so arranged that its inclined side is in contact with the correspondingly-inclined partition b, and its straight side in contact with the straight side of the block C, as seen in Fig. 2, or it may be the reverse. rlhe spring exerts a constant pressure on the wedge, to force it endwise between the shoulder b and block C, and keeps the latter always in close Contact with the crank-pin or journal h, and adjusts it thereto as fast as the parts become worn, so that the box pre serves a proper and uniform-tightness, and obviates thumping and heating and all lost motion. Upon the block C is formed a projecting lip, i, Figs. 2 and 3, which overlaps the ive-deje 011 its thick side and prevents the relilClhOll or removal of the wedge fFOm J6116 (MSG 111 one direction, or of the block c in the 0)@1101' To remove the box from the crank D111 the spring E is pressed back, which raises thc wedge and relieves the block C, and the whole may then be withdrawn from the crankA l The advantages obtained by my invention are simplicity of construction, durability, and economy ot' manufacture, as all the parts are of such a form that they may be readily east and fitted up with but very little preparation; and the spring being secured within the case it is protected from injury, and, at the same time, is readily accessible; and. all the parts may be very readily connected or discon nected, when desired, while the form and construction of the box-frame combine strength with lightness, especially adapting it for use on all machines employing cranks. 1
