To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES B. MASON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a s ecification,

y invention relates generally to toilet articles, more particularly to devices for holding articles such as lip sticks which are worn away during the use thereof, and

' it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which afi ords facilities for removably holding a lip stick so that the latter is available for 0 application when desired and when not be mg used is protected by an encasing body.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which includes readily operable means for movably supporting a lip stick or the like in respect to a casing, whereby the lip stick can be instantly projectedfrom the casing for use and as quickly moved to retracted position in the casing.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly outlined in v the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which,

Referring now to the drawings, my in vention provides a tubular casing or barrel 1 which is closed at one end as indicated at 2 and is open at its other end. The casin or barrel 1 is shown as being substantia ly elliptical and the end portion thereof is preferably convexo-concave although it may be flat without departing from the "spirit and scope of the invention.

Adapted to reciprocate within the casing 1 1s a cup 3 which is open at its outer end .and is proveded with a threaded rod or screw 4 which extends within the casin from the central portion of the closed en of the cup in axial alinement with'the cup, The screw l threadedly engages an interiorly threaded sleeve 5 which extends through a bearing 6 attached to or formed integrally with the inner wall of the'closed end 2 of the casing about a central opening through the latter. The sleeve 5 has an annular shoulder 5 abutting the end of the bearing 6 and projects through the latter and the central opening in the end portion of the casing exteriorly of the easing into threaded engagement with a head 7 which abuts at its inner end the outer face of the end 2 and thus acts conjointly with the shoulder 5' to prevent longitudinal movement of the sleeve 5 relatively to the bearing 6 while permitting rotation of the sleeve 5.

The head 7 may be knurled or have a knurled portion 8 extending circumferentially thereof to facilitate rotation of the head and of the sleeve 5 when the head is turned between the thumb and forefinger of a hand or in like manner.

A cap 9 is adapted to be slipped over the open end of the casing 1 to close the latter, whereby the cup 3 may be entirely encased and an article held therein thusprotected.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. A lip stick 3 or like cosmetic may be fitted into the cup 3. When it is desired to use the lip stick or cosmetic, the head 7 is' rotated in one direction to effect longitudinal movement of the on v3 toward the outer end of the casing 1.' bviously, a portion of article held within the cup 3 will thus be'available for use in an ordinary manner. After the cosmetic has been applied, the head 7 may be rotated in a direction opposite that described to effect retraction of the cup 3 in' the casing 1, whereby the article held within the on will be retracted into the casingl and tl ius protected. When the cap 9 is,

placed upon the open end portion of the casing 1, the cosmetic held within the cup 3 will be entirely housed and the device ma therefore be readily carried about in a han bag or pocket or like place without possibility of the article held within the cup coming into contact with the material forming the receptacle in which the device is disposed, and without possibility of the lip stick or like article being accidentally damaged while being carried about.

With the organization described, the casing 1 has imperforate sidewalls, the slot or slots ordinarily present in like devices being omitted. The piece or stick of rouge paint or the like which is held in the cup 3 is spaced from the inner walls of the casing the thickness of the side walls of the cup and is thus held out of contact with the walls of the casing and articularly with the edge thereof during the projection and retraction of the cup in the manner described. The threaded rod or screw 4 is rigid with the cup and is out of contact with the article held by the cup. The engagement of the sleeve 5 with the screw 4 will insure the holding of the cup in adjusted position so that a piece of rouge paint or the like held-by the cup will be maintained in either extended or retracted'position in respect to the casing until retracted by manipulation of the sleeve 5 in the manner described. In view of the advantageous features of my invention just enumerated, it will be obvious that my invention provides a sanitary device which is adapted to be used without the piece of rouge paint held thereby being touched by hand or coming into contact with any relatively moving portion of the device during the extension and retraction thereof from and into the casing of'the device, whereby the scraping of particles from the piece of rouge paint or the impairment thereof as frequently occurs in like devices, of which I am aware, is obviated.

Obviously, my invention is'susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated' in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all modifications and adaptations thereof that clearly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a tubular casing open at one end and closed at the other, a cup reciprocable within the casing and being disposed therein with its open end outermost, a screw extending from the closed end of the cup within the casing in axial alinement with the cup, a rotatable sleeve extending through the closed end of the casing and threadedly engaging the screw, means connected with the sleeve exteriorly of the casing for rotating the latter and for preventing longitudina movement of the sleeve in one direction relatively to the casing, whereby rotation of the sleeve will occasion longitudinal movement of the screw relatively to the casing.

A device of the character described comprising a tubular casing open at one end and closed at the other, a cup reciprocable within the casing and arranged therein with the open end thereof outermost, said cup being adapted to releasably hold a piece of cosmetic or the like, a threaded rod rigidly secured to the cup and extending rearwardly thereof within the casing in axial alinement therewith, a sleeve in threaded engagement adjacent to its forward end with the rearward end portion of the rod and extending axially of the casing through theclosed end thereof, a bearing for the sleeve, said hearing being carried by the closed end of the casing and said sleeve having a shoulder abutting the bearing, and a head engaged with the sleeve and in abutting relation to the outer face of the closed end of the casing,

whereby said sleeve is held against longiwith the open end thereof outermost, said cup being adapted to releasably hold a piece of cosmetic or the like, a threaded rod rigidly secured to the cu and extending therewith, a sleeve in threa ed engagement adjacent to its forward end with the rearward end por-' tion of the rod and extending axially of the casing through the closed end thereof, a bearing for the sleeve, said bearin being carried by the closed end of the casing and said sleeve having a shoulder abutting the bearing, a head engaged with the sleeve and .in abutting relation to the outer face of the closed end of the casing whereby said sleeve is held against longitudinal movement relatively to the casing and is free to rotate, and a cap for the .open end portion of the casing.
