UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE EPHRAIM SHAV AND JOSEPH H. BEATTY, OF TARE FARM, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELL-TUBE CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,071, dated February 8, 1874 application filed November 1, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, EPHRAIM SHAW and JOSEPH H. BEATTY, of Tarr Farin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and Improved Well-Tube Clamp, of which the following' is a specifica tion:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of our improved well-tube cla-mp on the line c c, Fig. 2, with handle turned up for hoisting; the tubing; Fig. 2, a top view ofthe same with handle in horizontal position to be used as pipeftongs; and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section on the line a Fig. 3, showing adjustable latch with pivoted jaw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in combining, with the collar or socket of a well-tube clamp, a pivoted hasp, which is hinged to a bolt-shaped extension of said socket, and hooked at its outer Or free end, so as to engage with a second extension of the socket, provision being also made for adjusting the latch in respect to the socket, through the inediunl of nuts.
The invention further consists in applying to the inner side of the pivoted latch one or more serrated griping-jaws, which serve to securely hold the object inserted into the socket.
In the drawing, A represents the recessed collar or tube socket, made Ot U shape, and of suitable material, to which the forked handle B is hinged, to be used in horizontal and vertical position. Handle B may be arranged with or without swivel end, as may be desired. A taperingprojection, a, of the socket A extends under handle B in the direction of the same, and serves to support it thereon, so as to prevent its swinging below the horizontal position. The thiinble of the tubing rests On an inside rini, b, of socket A, and is tightly clasped by the dog or jaw C, which is pivoted into the recessed part of latch D. Latch D is hinged to one bolt-shaped extension or leg, A', of U-shaped socket'A, and locks with its Opposite hook-shaped end over the other leg A' Of socket A. The extent of throwing Open the hinged latch D is dened by a catch, d, of leg A', and a corresponding recess, d', of the hinge part of latch D, as shown in Fig. 3. Screwnuts c turn on the threaded ends Of the legs A', and adjust the latch D to different sizes Ot' tubing, clamping the saine'firnily by eccentric j aw C, whether the device is used for unscrewing Or hoisting the tubes from the well.
Having thus described our invention, we cla-ini as new and desire tO secure by Letters Patentl. In combination with the collar or socket A of a well-tube clamp, the pivoted hasp D, applied to bolt-shaped extensions Or shanks A A' of the collar A, said shanks being provided with nuts, or their equivalents, for adjusting the latch iu respect to the collar or socket, substantially as shown and described.
2. The pivOted latch D, provided with a griping jaw or block, C, as and for the purpose set forth.
EPHRAIM SHAV. J. HENRY BEATTY.
