` which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ventilator mechanism which can be used for Ventilating purposes in general, but which is particularly useful in homes for permitting the outflow of foul air and the inflow of fresh air without causing draft.
kThe usual type of ventilator'` requires for its application or operation the opening of a window. The ventilators are usually applied at the sill at the opening afforded below the raised window sash. This however causes an opening between the upper and lower sashes through which there will be un# restricted ow which will more or less upset Ventilating current and cause drafts. The principal object of my invention is to provide. Ventilating mechanism which canbe applied directly to the window panes in any po-` siti.ondesired makin@ it unnecessar to o env the windows and therefore making it possible to control Ventilation as desired. In carrying out my invention l cut a hole in the window pane at the desired location, and provide a suitable guide for sliding a shutter, preferably `of glass, for opening or closing the opening to any degree desired, and preferably screening material is applied over the opposite side of the pane opening.
My improved mechanism and its application and operation are illustrated onthe accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 -is an elevational View of ansection of window pane showing the Ventilating apparatus applied thereto.

Thev Ventilating opening 5 is cutl in the window pane 6 and may be elliptical as shown, or of any other shape. The shutter 7 is preferably of glass and of the same general outline as the Ventilating opening with which it is to be associated. As shown the shutter is guided between the pane and a vertical bar `Sito be slid up and down against the window pane to open or close the Ventilating opening 5 as desired. The bar is detachably secured at its upper and lower ends by screws or bolts 9 and 10 which eX- tend through holes 11 and 12 formed in the window pane. The shutter may be supportv ed on either side of the pane but preferably on the outside thereof so as to better protect the Ventilating opening a-gainstthe entrance of rain, snow, etc.

The bar 8 has the longitudinal slots 17 through which extends a bolt. 18 which is y inserted through the opening 19 provided at the upper edge of the shutter, the head of the bolts being preferably countersunk so as to leave theinner face of the shutter smooth and free to slide along the pane. The shank of the bolt extends through the slot 17 and its reduced threaded end 2O receives a clip 21 which is held to the screw between the shoulder 22 and the nut 23 engaging the threaded end 20. At its upper end the cliphas a hole 24 for receiving the end of a cord r25, and this cord extends through a thimble 26 inserted in the opening 27 provided in the window pane above the Ventilating opening 5. This thimble may be of sheet metal inserted through `-the opening 27 and` having its ends riveted overagainst the sides ofthe window pane. The cord eX- tends downwardly and through a suitable fitting (not shown) by means of which it may be fastened to hold the shutter in any desired position with reference to the ventilating opening.` There are many forms of clamping pulleys and other devices on the market which can be readilyused in connection with the cord and these can be vfastened to the window frame or sill, or sash as desired. The slot 17 extends upwardly a distance beyond the thimble 26 so 'that the cord may travel through the slotduring adjustment of the shutter.
On the opposite side ofthe window pane a suitable screen 28 of wire or perforated metal is applied over the Ventilating opening 5 and may be readily secured in place by means oi rivets or bolts 29 whose heads are coiintersunh so as not to interfere with the sliding movement of the shutter.
As the shutter is supported from its upper end above its center otl gravity it will always hang and slide true, and by manipulating` the cord the shutter ran be raised and lowered to any position. rhc shutter supporting screw 18 traveling in the slot 17 will guide the Asliutt'er in its vertiral movement and the bar will keep the shutter against the window pane but wil. permit 'it to slide freely. The cushioning abutment l-lwill prevent injury to the shutter should it be too rapidly lowered. l'Vhen the Ventilating mechanism is applied to a. sliding, swinging or other movable window the cord locking ritting (not shown) will be seciuied to tl'ie window sash, s'o that the window may be moved asa whole without interfering with Athe adjustment of the Vventilating mechanisin.
. l thus provide simple and eliicient Ventllating mechanism which will permit the outflow of smoke, steam, or foul air from a room and the inflow of fresh air without causing drafts, andthe mechanism can be applied and manipulated without interfering with the opening or closing of the window structure, I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction, arrangement and operation shown and described as moditications can be made which will still come within lthe scope of the invention.'

l. in ventilating mechanism, the combination olI a window pane having a ventilating opening, a shutter for said opening in the iorm of a glass plate, a guide bar bridging said opening on one side of said pane, said shutter being hclid against said pane by saidk guide bar, said pane having a guide opening therethrough above said Ventilating opening, a cord serured at one end to the upper end of said shutter and extending through said guide opening to be manipulated on the other side of said pane 'to raise and lower said shutter, said guide bar having a guide slot, and an extension on said shutter engaging `in said slot to confine sai-d shutter to Vertical movement when it is raised and lowered yby means of said cord.
2. ln ventilating mechanism, the combination of a window pane lia-'ving a Ventilating opening therethrough, a shutter 'or said opening in the form oi a glass plate, a guide bar extending vertically and bridging said ventilating opening, said bar being secured at its upper and lower ends to said pane, said bar having a vertical guide slot, a pin extending trom said shutter through said guide slot, a cord connected at one end with said pin, a thimble extending through said pane above said ventilating opening and in register with the upper end of said guide slot, said cord extending through said thimble to the opposite side of said win dow pane to be manipulated to cause raising and lowering of said shutter with reference to said ventilating opening, said bar holdinfr said shutter against said window pane and said pin and slot connection coni'ining said shutter to vertical movement when it is raised and loweredbymeans of said cord.
