IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-Boxes.

Specification forming parapf Letsatent No. 146,959, dated January 27', 1874; application filed To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK M. THOMSON, of New York city, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Cartridge-Boxes, of which the followin is a specification:

The object of my invention is to provide for reversible cartridge-boxes, having two reservoirs for cartridges, holding double the amount of cartridges as usually carried, and so arranged that both reservoirs are placed together and opposite each other, and can be readily and immediately so adjusted that the cartridges in the second reservoir are in turn, as the rst becomes exhausted, placed in proper position to be reached and taken out of their respective compartments. My invention consists in constructing a double reservoir having compartments in both ends for the reception of cartridges, and placing this double reservoir into a leather box. Both ends of this box are left open for the placing of the cartridges into their respective compartments, and these openings provided-with adjustable covers for the holding and preservation of the cartridges.

To the center of the back of the leather box is pivoted a metallic plate, by the aid of a bolt penetrating the center of the double cartridge-reservoir, and riveted to washers or plates on the front and back of the leather box, in such a manner that the metallic plate will turn freely and readily on this pivot. To the back of the metallic plate are fastened, by rivets, bows and buckles, by aid of which the cartridge-box is held to the wearers belts. Two straps are also attached by rivets to this metallic plate, having eyelets in their outer ends,

`by aid of which they can `be fastened to two buttons placed on the sides a-nd in the center of the leather box, and thus preventing the metallic plate from turning on its center.

The operation of my reversible cartridgebox is as follows: The cartridges are rst placed in the compartments having the shortest cover, which is then buttoned in front. The second compartmcntswith the long cover, are next filled with cartridges, and the long cover buttoned down over the front of the pecember 24, 1873.

In this last position, with the end of the large cover downward, the cartridge-box is ordinarily carried, the long cover being unbottoned and raised when the cartridges are taken from the compartments covered by the same. When these are exhausted of cartridges, the leather straps, preventing the metallic back plate from turning on its center or pivot, are unbottoned, the cartridge-box turned upside down, and the straps again adjusted totheir respective buttons. In this position of the cartridge-box, the large cover will hang downward. The smaller cover being unbuttoned, the cartridges in the upper compartments can now be taken out and used in turn, as required.

In order to more fully describe my improvements, I refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Figure I is a vertical sectional view of a cartridge-box embodying my invention. Fig. II is a back view of the same as ordinarily carried. Fig. III is a back view of the same as carried when the second cartridge-reservoir is in position for use.

Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The center metallic plate F, with bows h h, buckles c' t', and straps j j, in combination with a reversible cartridge-box, having a double cartridge-reservoir, D, protected with covers B and O, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
