WALTER H. K1NG or DENVER, coLoRAno.
MATCH-HOLDING CIGARETTE CONTAINER.'
Application led April 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I-LKING, a citizen -of the United States of America, residing` at the lcity and county of Den-ver and State of Colorado, have invented anew and useful Match-Holding Cigarette Container, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match holding cigarette containers.
The vobject of the invention is to provide a container for either cigarettes or cigars, with means for holding a plurality of matches, said means being adapted to be adhesively connected, thereby enabling the same to be attached to either boxes or packa es.
gFurther to provide a cigarette box orpackagewith a"strip of suitable material which is adhesively secured thereto, said strip being `crimped'or corrugated to provide a plurality of individual match holding pockets, and having a' portion provided with a friction surface for convenience in lighting the matches, whereby the necessity of carrying a box `of matches in addition to the package, is eliminated.
These objects are accomplished by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette holding box having a hinged cover, the inside surface of which is provided with' the improved' match holding attachment.
Fig. 2 is a, perspective view of a similar box to that shown in Fig. 1, but having the match holding attachment secured upon the outside surface thereof.
Fi 3 is a top ifiew of a pocketed match holding attachment as it appears before being pasted upon the cigarette box or package.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an ordinary paper package or container for cigarettes showing the match holdin attachment secured upon the outside sur ace of the same.
Figure 5 is a top view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional View of a package, showing the match holding attachment secured to the inside surface of oneA of the sides thereof, and
Fig. 7 is a side view of a package having a match holding attachment secured to its outside surface and which is provided with a double row of match holding ockets, the pockets of one row being in en -to-end re- 1922. Serial No. 548,592.
lation with the pockets of the other row.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: The numeral 1 indicates a pasteboard box havlngv a hinged cover 2. This box is a common style of box in which cigarettes are packed in small quantities, usually about twenty to the box, for the convenience of the individual smoker. Upon the inside face of the lid or cover 2 of this box is secured the improved match holding attachment, which is arranged and constructed as follows: The attachment comprises a strip of paper or other suitable material 3, which 1s pressedl -or folded to form a plurality of parallel corrugations or pockets 4,*which are preferably closed at their bottomrends.
The'corrugatxons alternate with narrow flat portions 5, which are adapted to be gummed or given a coating of adhesive substancel and each outside pocket terminates in a flat marginal portion 6 which is likewise adapted to be gummed so that when the attachment is applied to a box or package, it is adhesively connected thereto by means of the gummed' flat portion 5, between each two pockets 4, and also by means of the margmal ortions 6 which extend from the two outsi e pockets, thus providing a plurality of spaced individualmatch-holding pockets whichv are securely supported upon the box or package. i
The strip 3l from which the match-holding attachment is formed is preferably wider than the length ofthe pockets, so as to extend beyond one end of the row of pockets, asshown at 7, to provide a surface upon .which sand or emery 8, may be placed to afford a'. friction surface for convenience in lightin the matches; or this friction material if esired ma be such as is used in lighting safety matclies, so that either safety matches or matches of the common type may be supplied to the match holder.
In Fig. 1 the portion 7 having the friction element 8, extends above the open ends of the pockets, as the bottom ends of the pockets abut against one end of the lid or cover, but when the attachment is placed on the outside of a box or package, as in Figures 2, 4, and 7 the position of the friction element is immaterial.
In attaching the match holder to the inside face of a box lid, as in Fig. l, the bottom ends vof the pockets rest against one end of the lid so as to leave suilicient room bellO opposite end .of the 1id,to allow the matches to b e withdrawn from the ckets, and small match sticks are prefera ly used so that when the lid or cover isclosed down upon the box the matches will not'exertundue pressure upon the cigarettes. In Figures 2,
4 and 5 the same character 'of match holder is used as in Fig. 1, but in Fig. 2 the match holder is attached to the outside of a box, while! in Figs. 4 and 5 it is attached to the outside of a inside face of one of the sides of a paper package 1B, in ywhich arrangement 'the matches are concealed, and 'as the matches take up very little room, the packages would not have to beenlarged in order to accommodate-them.
In Fi 7 is shown a side view of a ageA 1, aving a match holder capab e of carrying about twice the number of matches as are carried by the holders shown in the other views.` In carrying out this arran ement, I provide a strip Q, having a dou le rolwof corrugations orpockets 10, which are formed in end to end alinement, the outer ende of the pockets being open to receive the matches while their inner ends are closed and the. strip 9 is provided with afriction element 11', which for convenience extends parallel with the =mhtches. In practice, the strips` from which the match holders are made are stamped or corrugated by any suitable means ,to provide a plurality of parallelmatch-holding pockets alternating with narrow flat portions, the
outside pockets being provided with lat marginal edge portions, The entire rear L side of the strips, exclusive of the ckets is given a coating of adhesive material, and
- e portion of the front side of. the strip is aperpackage 1^. In Fio. 6' the match ho der is shown attached toethe 'receiving corrugations suppliedfwith a suitable friction element such as sand or emery, applied as in the case of match boxes in commonpuse. The match holding attachments '.thus arr'an ed, are ready to be applied to boxes or pa( ci ars or cigarettes of a size usually supages of plied to the retail trade, and the pockets are the attachment is pasted. wk-
The attachment is cheap and practical and relieves the purchaser of a package oi ci arettes, ofthe necessity ofproviding himse f with matches.
Having described-my invention, what II claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the ,character described, the combination with a box cover of a strip provided with a pluralit of parallel matchternating with flat portions and terminating in a Hat end por-4 cured to the inner face of said cover, said ,corrugations being substantially half 'the i length of the cover and said end portion hav-A a sanded'surface.- v n testimony whereof -I aixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
