Like characters of reference indicate like parts of the several views of the drawings. The embodiment of my invention shown in theV accompanying drawings comprises a wall-bracket 5, having a socket 6, in which an electric lamp 7 is held, all in the usual manner. -For convenience .thebracket is preferably attachedY to a wall above the head of a bed asV shown in Fig. 4. The bracket ig.A 2 `whereby 'ha-li of the main orbody portion of the is` provided with the usual shadefholder 8 having an inturned outer annular edge and set-screws 9 to receive and hold the flared endfoif a shade 10. The shade 10-is preferablyformedout of translucentglass of a 'subduedlcolor,.as`.green, that will diffuse a Vsoothing light; and the inner surface of the shade is finished in white to increase its ca pacity for the reflection of light. Beginning at a, at a suitable distance from its .flared inner endr the material of the shade lOis omitted to b, inthe manner shown in approximately the lower shade is removed for the unobstructed downward discharge of light from the lamp 7. This entire omittedportion is closed, however, by a metalV member 11, having a ila-t bottom 12 through which a lightopen-l ing 13 is formed. The discharge of light through this opening is regulated and controlled by a door llthat is here sho-wn as secured to the bottom 12 4b v a pivot 15 at the inner end of the door. The door will preferablybe dished at 16 to provide more equal clearance between it and the lamp, and the door will have a button 17 by which it may be'more easily operated manually by swinging it on its pivot in opening and closing the door. The sides of the member 11 fit closely against the shade 10 so light will not escape at the joint; and clamping the inner end of member 11 to the shade l0, is a split metal band 18. TheV ends formed by the split in the band are bent outwardly parallel with each other when 'closed together and are brought to this position by a screw 19 and wing-nut 2O by means of which the band is clamped around the neck of the shade 1() in the manner shown to removably secure the member 1l to the shade 10. When the interior of the device is to be cleaned, or the Vlamp` 7 is to be renewed, the member 11 is downwardly from the lamp, but a bright light will be discharged downwardly upon opening the door 14.
