My invention relates to smoking pipes generally, and has for its obje t to provide a simple and ornamental attachment there for which conducts off a portion of the heat and thus materially cools the smoke belore arriving at the end of the pipe stein.

Another object of the invention is the provision otl a well in the pipe stein and means for causing av portion of the nicotine sorghum and moisture to collect in the well.

Another object ot' the invention resides in the provision ot an auxiliary air inlet to the pipe stem at a point above the well which not only cools the smoke, but also has a tendimy to retain the nicotine, etc.7 in the bottom of the well, due to the current of air pressing on the top of the collected matter.

A Vfurther object of the invention. comprises an arrangement of spring lingers which, in addition to collecting nicotine and the like.l also frictionally engage the wall of the Well and thereby secure the plug in f place.

Other objects and advantages ot the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a tobacco pipe.

Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the detachable plug.

Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral 1 designates the bowl of a tobacco pipe provided With a Vstem 2. This stern is formed with a well 3 which extends below the bored of the stem and is provided with a metal or other wearresisting lining 5. T his well is for the purpose ot receiving a portion of' the nicotine, sorghum, moisture and the like which may be collected from the smoke by the device described hereinafter.

The plug just described is adapted to be 'i screwed or otherwise attached to the pipe stem by seating the same in an opening 12 formed in the upper wall ot the stem in. line with the well 3. 17V hen so seated in the opening 12 the plug is held against accidental displacement by means of the pins 8 which frictionally engage the lining 5 ot the well.

In operation, the smoke passing through the bore 4i is diffused by the pins 8, which also collect a portion of the nicotine` sorghum, etc., from the smoke and direct the 'same to the well 3. The pins 8, in connection with the metal plug 6 and metal projection 9, also act as a radiator in conducting a portion ot the heat to the exterior ot the pipe stem. The air inlet 10 communicates with the conduit 11 and allows an yauxiliary supply of air to be combinede with the smoke in the stem, thereby further cooling and dilutingthe smoke. Furthermore, the stream of air descending through the con` duit 11 aids the pins 8 in holding the material collected in the well 3 in place and prevent the same from being drawn through the mouth piece 13. rllhe well and plug may be cleaned, of course, by merely remove ing the latter from the stem which gives complete access to the well 3.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the plug 6 is provided with the same longitudinalconduit 11, but instead of the annular row of pins 8 the modified plug carries the annular row of coil springs 14;. These springs are more effective in diiusing the smoke and in collecting objectionable matter therefrom. A metal disc 15 is carried. by the lower ends of the springs and prevents the latter from mutilating the pipe stem when the plug is attached and removed. rI'his dise is used in lieu ot the lining 5 and in conjunction with springs 14 Will prevent accidental turning movement of the plug. An aperture 16 is formed in the disc l5 to permit the insertion ot' a tool tor cleaning the conduit l1.

Fromthe foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple attachment ior tobacco pipes which functions not only as a radiator, but also removes a portion of the nicotine7 sorghum7 ete.7 from the smoke and otherwise improves its taste.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but I do not Wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention7 as many changes and niodications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.

`What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. tobacco pipe having a lateral opening` in its stem, said' stemv having` a well therein in alignment with said opening, the bottom of the Well being positioned belowY the bore of the stem, a plug in said lateral opening, and a plurality of spring Wires secured to said plug and adapted to collect moisture, nicotine and the like Aand direct the same to the Well.
