J. T. JANETTE FASTENER FOR SECURING DISKS ON SHAFTS Filed Nov. 8, 1920 Q Patented Sept. 1923.
UNITED STATES JOHN '1. JANETTE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FASTENER FOR SECURING DISKS ON SHAFTS.
Application filed November 8, 1920. Serial No. 422,608.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN T.JJANETTE, a
citizen of the United btates, and residing at novel fastening device which comprises a.
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Securing Disks on Shafts, of which the following is a specification.
Although this invention is particularly applicable to the arm atures of motors it may also be applied to other purposes.
The objects of this invention are to provide an improved armature construction; to provide a novel arrangement for fastening laminations or disks on the shaft; to provide means for rapidly securing laminations to the shaft with a comparatively small amount of work and without tending to bend or injure the shaft; and in general to provide such an improved fastening device and combination of parts as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention;
Figure 1 is an end view, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line of Figure 1.
In the particular form of the device shown in these drawings, 3 is an armature shaft having a key-way 4: therein and having a collar 5 adjacent to one end thereof. washer 6 fits against the collar 5 and the laminations or disks 7 are pressed against this washer. These disks are provided with projections 8 which engage with the keyway 4.
These laminations'are held by means of a ring or washer 9 which is slotted to form a plurality of radial tongues 10. The central opening between these tongues is of slightly less diameter than the portion of the shaft with which the fastening device engages. This device is placed on over the end of the shaft and pressed closely against the laminations or other parts to be locked on the shaft. l
The tonguesor projections 10 act somewhat in the mannerof ratchets and engage with the shaft so as to hold the device against backward movement. As ordinarily used, these tongues will cut slight grooves in the shaft as shown at 11 as the device is pressed onto the shaft. It will be seen that this deviceis placed on longitudinally so that there is'no tendency toward bending the shaft and consequently makes it particularly applicable for small motors or generators. It will also benoted that the device can be readily applied without' the necessity of threading the shaft or making any other provisions for the holding device.
It will readily be seen that I provide a simple holding mechanism which has proved effective in actual practice and serves to cheapen the cost of the construction of motors or the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An armature construction comprising a shaft having an abutment at one end thereof, a plurality. of laminations on said shaft adapted to be held against said abutment. a ring having its outer portion pressing on the laminations to hold them against said abutment said ring having a plurality of inwardly projecting tongues with a central opening of less diameter than the shaft. the portions of the tongues engaging with a shaft, being harder than the shaft whereby they will cut into the shaft when pressed down, the arrangement being such when the ring-is pressed. to holding position the ends of the tongues will be spaced from the adj acent laminations, substantially as described.
JOHN T. JANETTE.
