Description

G. EY
BUILDING BLOCK Filed Dec. 9, 1922 WITNESSES rvfwiw mswz INVENTOR Gustav Ey A TTORNEYS Patented Sept. 11, 1923.
GUSTAV EY, OF NE'W' YORK, N. Y.
BUILDING BLOCK.
Application filed. December 9, 1922-.
T all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAv Er, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Building Blocks. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a simple and durable block so designed that, when. subjected to a breaking strain, the line of break is long in comparison to the dimensions of the block.
A further object of the invention is the construction of a building block so designed as to provide end grooves of sufficient size to facilitate the handling of the blocks.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a building block in which the web and bracing members joining the side walls terminate in a plane extending at right angles to the side walls so that the line defining the juncture of the ends of the bracing members and web with the side walls is straight.
These objects are accomplished by providing a block including side walls formed integral with a web and bracing members joining them, the ends of the bracing members and web being located in a common plane extending at right angles to the side walls which extend beyond the web on all sides and forming the inner faces of the side walls extending beyond the ends of the bracing members and web so that they diverge as they extend outward.
These and other objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the building block;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the building block;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the buildin block.
Tteferring to the above-mentioned drawings, the building block includes side walls 10 and 11 joined together by a web 12. The side walls 10 and 11 extend beyond the web 12 on all sides thus forming a unit in which. a channel is provided encircling the web 12. Integral with the side wall 11 and the web 12 are two bracing members 15 and 16, while integral with the side wall 10 and the web 12 are bracing members 17 Serial No. 6b5,901.
and 18. The bracing members are of triangular cross section and extend the length of the web. The width of the bracing members 15 to 18, inclusive, is equal to the distance from the web to the edge oi. either of the side walls 10 or 11. Since the bracing members 15 to 18, inclusive, are equal in length to the web 12, the ends of the bracing members and web lie in a plane which extends at right angles to the outer faces of the walls 10 and 11.. The line of juncture of the ends of the bracing mem-- bers 15 and 16 and the web 12 with the wall 11 is straight. Similarly the line oi juncture of the ends of the bracing members 17 and 18 and the web 12 with the side wall 10 is straight. The inner faces 19 of the side walls 10 and 11 are shaped so that they diverge as they continue outward from the web and bracing members.
A block of this type constructed with the bracing members and the web terminating in a plane is very convenient in building since by breaking away an end of either of the side walls along the line of juncture of the bracing members with the side walls a rectangular opening is provided for receiving a beam. The latter when projected into the opening thus formed may then rest on the straight face of the block beneath. Another advantage gained in making a construction of this type is the chan nel extending Vertically across the end of: the building block which is wide at the bottom so that the builder in placing the block in position may insert his hand in the groove, obtaining a good grip of the web.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims:
1. A building block of the character de scribed, comprising side walls, a web con necting said side walls, and bracing members integral with the side walls and web, said side walls extending beyond the ends of the web and bracing members, and the inner faces of the side walls at each end of the block diverging from the line of uncture "of the side walls with the web and bracing members.
2. A block of the character described, comprising side Walls, an ll haped Web oining said side Walls, said Web terinlnating short of the ends of the side Walls, the inner faces of the side Walls at each end or the block diverging as they continue outward from the Web.
3. In a building block including side Walls a Web having bracing members integral therewith formed integral With the side Walls for connecting them together, said web and bracing members terminating short of the ends of the side Walls, the line defining the meeting of the Web and bracing members with the side Walls being straight.
l. A building block, comprising side Walls, an I-shaped Web joining the side Walls said Web terminating short of the side walls, the ends of the Web meeting the side Walls along straight lines and the inner faces of the Walls diverging as they continue outward from the Web.
