J. L. MAUCH COOLING DEVICE FOR CASTING, MACHINES Filed June 3. 1922 gnucufoz Min 5555 Patented Sept. 11, 1923.
JOHN L. MAUGH, OF GULF, TEXAS.
COOLING DEVICE FOR CASTING MACHINES.
Application filed June i 3,
To u]? whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. MAUCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lull, in the county of Matagorda and btate of Texas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cooling Device for (lasting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a device for cooling and solidifying layers of liquid hot cast material. such as sulphur, by means of a gas or vapor or mixture thereof and is especially useful in conjunction With a method and apparatus such as is described in my application filed on even-date and also in my application filed on; Mag -10, 1921, hearing Serial Number 468223 now Patent No. 1,417,542.
The object of the invention is to bring a cooling fiuirL ordinarily air. into effective contact with the layer of cast hot material such as sulphur. in order to produce quick cooling and economical use of such cooling fluid.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will be simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation. comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and operate, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the device showing the same in combination with an apparatus while in use, and
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
The hot liquid sulphur is discharged upon the \velted belt 1 or upon a layer of previously deposited sulphur :2 forming a comparatively uniform liquid layer by means of the nozzles 3 which may be of any preferred construction and do not form a part of the present invention,
The sulphur will be cooled and solidified due to the cooling action of the surface upon which it is discharged and also due to the cooling action of a stream of air passing 1922. Serial No. 565,577.
over its upper surface which is sup lied by the device about to be described. n order to use such air efficiently it is caused to pass over the deposited sulphur in a comparatively thin stream so that thorough contact may be established between the air and the sulphur, due to their proximity and the air eddies caused by friction.
The device consists of a cover 4 which is suspended over the layer of sulphur in such a manner to obtain clearance of the passage of the air between it and the sulphur. The stream of air is fed into such passa e from a header 5 which will receive its supp y from the main air duct by means of a flexible connecting duct, not shown, attached to the neck 6. Thefheader may be fully or only partially open over the sulphur layer, but preferably the cover should extend over the header, adjacent to each side of the sulphur layer so as to prevent to a great extent the leakage of air from the header before it has been brought into immediate contact with the sulphur as is shown to advantage in the drawing. This header is also preferably provided with a flexible flap 7 for maintaining contact with a roller 8 adjacent thereto to prevent excessive leakage in that direc tion, this roller 8 being journalled on a shaft 9 over which extend the hook extensions 10 as is indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1. This roller, by making contact with the surface of the solidified sulphur, will further prevent air leakage in a direction toward the adjacent sulphur discharge nozzle The roller is also necessary to aid in carrying the air header and cover, maintaining a uniform clearance between the same and the surface of the sulphur.
This roller 8 is maintained in its proper position by the guide brackets 11 engaging the shaft extensions from the roller or in any other suitable manner. It is desirable that the roller may rise or lower to maintain contact with the sulphur as the thickness varies. The cover or header are further supported and maintained bv bracket extensions 13 which are to be carried by the roller of the adjacent cooling device, or, by a fixed support where there is no adjacent cooling device, as is the case beyond the first nozzle header. One or more such cooling devices may be used, as necessary. to cool the layer or layers being deposited. It will be noted that other fluids than air may be used for the The modification of the invention' whi'ch I" have disclosed with'some degree of particularity, refers to the preferredform thereo f and has been given only by way of example it being understood that numerous changes may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention What 1 claim as new is l. A cooling device of the classdescribed including a cover, a header at one end'of the cover, a duct for receiving a cooling medium passing through said header,
2. In a cooling device of the class de scribed, 21 cover, a header at on end ofthe cover to contain a cooling incdiu'nifa flexible flap mounted in the header, a roller iintacting with said flexible flap roliatably mounted adjacent the header. v v f 3. In combination, a cover, anal; header at one end of saidcover, a rolleiiforsnp'porting the header, and means for supporting the end of the cover.
t. In combination, a cover, an air header roller, guides for engaging the shaft so as to allow the roller to be vertically adjnstzr ble, and means for supporting the oil'ier end of the cover,
5. In combination, a moving carrier, a roller, a cooling device supported on the roller in spaced relation to the carrier and a layer of solidified material thereon.
6. An apparatus for cooling hot liquid ma terial as it is being cast comprising a mow ing carrier, a cover, a header at one end ol' the cover to contain a cooling medium. and means forhbltling the cover and header in spaced relation above the moving carrier.
In testimony Whereoi l aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
