Description

APPARATUS FOR ROLLING G' MHPMATUS FDH ROLLING GLASS Filed June? 1926 at heetsl-Sh ai;
APRTUS FOR ROLLING GLASS nected to av horizontal suction pipe 19, as indicated in Fig. 4. In the construction illustrated, there are four suction chambersv 13, each connected to a vertical pipe 18 leading to the pipe 19 (Fig. 3), the arranvement for exhausting the fair from all of the chambers being the same that' just above described. Similarly, each of the discharge chambers 12 is provided With a laterally and downwardly extending passage 2O corresponding to the passage 17 and connected to t e upper ends of the vertical pipes 21 lying alongside the vertical pipes 18 (Fig. 3).
These pipes 21 extend downwardly and laterally intoV a supply pipe 22 lying beneath the suction pipe 19 and parallel thereto. A suitable suction fan is provided for exhausting air from the pipe 19 and a'blower` is connected to the pipe 22 for supplying the -,over the surface of the roll, thus giving a ,substantial chilling effect, and there is no esca e of air which might tend to injuriousi ly a ect arts d the apparatus in the vicinity of tie roll. The discharge from the upper headers 8, is also directed circumferentially of the upper roll 1, but the air as thus supplied around the r'oll to the right is permitted to discharge to the air, since this pointis so far removed from the sheet 3 that its el'ect -upon such sheet is not harmful.
The arrangement shown in Fi 5 is similar to that of Fig. l except tat in this construction the headers 23 beneath the roll 2 are arranged farther to the right so as to give more space at 24 for access to the roll and lip 5 and a baille 25 is provided for giving a. better distribution of air throu h the header, s indicated by the arrow. The air is Withdrawn through the suction chamber 27 as in the other type of construction. The upper header 26 is also similar to the upper header in the Fig. 1 construction with the exception that a baille 28 is employed similar to the baille 25. Fig. 6 illustrates a modification of the lower header, in which two suction chambers 29 and 30 are employed qn opposite sides of the discharge chamber 31, and in this construction the outlets 32are arranged vertically instead of at an angle. A pair'of asbestos packing plates 33 and 3i are e1n-` ployed ,bearing against the roll as shown, in order to prevent leakage at these points. In this construction, the flow of air is circumferential of the roll in both directions e suction chambers 13, at which' instead of being in the one direction only as in the Fig. 1 construction. A suitable bl0w-' er is connected to the discharge chamber,
While the suction chambers are provided with connections leading to a suitable exhaust apparatus.
Tt'hat l claim is: 1. rlhe combination in glass rolling apparatus having a pair of internally Water coo ed rolls, of supplemental cooling means for one `ot' the rolls, comprising a` header extending longitudinally thereof along one side und 4provided with outlet means along ono' side directed against the surface of the roll and means Afor supplying a gaseous cooling fluid to said header under pressure.
2. The combination in glass rolling a az l ratus, having a pair of rollsthrough W ich glass is supplied, of coolingfmeans for one of the rolls, comprising a header extending along one of the rolls and havin its side hollowed out so asI to t aroun the periphery of the roll, with outlet means leading through such side, means for supplying gaseous cooling fluid to the header under pressure, a second header at'one side of the -rst header fitting around the roll and having an inlet opening toward the rolls and means for app ying suction to such second lheader.
3. The combination in glass rolling aplparatus, having a pair of rolls through w ich glass'is supplied, of cooling means for one of the rolls, comprising a header extending along one of the rolls and having its side hollovved out so as to t around the e riphery of the roll, with outlet means leading through such side, and inclined obliquely with respect to the roll, and means for supplying gaseous cooling `fluid to the header under pressure to cause a flow thereof through said outlet means and around the roll in one direction. y
4. The cnbination in glass rolling appa ratus, having a pair of rolls through which glass is supplied, of cooling means fori one ofthe rolls, comprising a header extending along one of the rolls and having' its side` hollovved out so as to t around 'the peripher of the roll with outlet means leading throng such side, and inclined obliquely with respect to the roll, means for supplying' gaseous cooling fluid to the header under pressure to cause a flow thereof through said outlet means and around the roll in one direction, a second header on the side of the first header toward whichthe gaseous fluid from the outlet means is directed 4fitting around the roll and, having an inlet opening toward the roll, and means for applying suction to such second header.
5. The combination in glass rolling aplparatus, having atpair of rolls through w ch glass is supplie of cooling means for one of the rolls, comprising a header extending along one of the rolls and havin its Iside hollowed out so as to t arounc the -pe riphery oi' the roll, with outlet means leading through such side, means for supplying gaseous cooling Huid to the header under pressure, Va second header at one side of the irst header fitting around the roll and having an inlet opening toward the rolls, and means for applying suction to vsuch second header, flexible packing means being provided between the roll Vand the outer side of the second header.
6. The combination in glass rolling aaparatus, having a pair/of rolls through winch glass is supplied, of cooling` means for one of the rolls, comprising means for supplying a gaseous Cooling fluid againstvthe surface of the roll and causmg it to iiow circumfering: a header extending longitudinally of the f' roll and havin@ iis .side hollowed out so as.,
to fit around ttl-ie periphery of .the rollend provided with outlet means along one side directed against the surface of the roll, and means for supplying a gaseous cooling fluid to said header under pressure.
