.FRANK CABALKA, 0F GEDDES, SOUTH DAKOTA.
CORN-FODDER KNIFE.
Application filed December 11, 1922.
i of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention-e Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 2%3 of F ig. 2.
Figure 4L is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.-
The improved device comprises a base or platform portion 10 having a longitu dinal opening or slot 11 and supported upon transverse cleats 12 and with an encompassing drop portion 13.
The cleats 12 serve as heads to support leg members 14 which are bolted thereto, as at 15.
Attached to the upper face of the platform 10 near one end is a divided standard 16 between whose sides a cutting blade or knife 17 is pivoted at 18.
The knife extends at its free end beyond the opposite end of the platform and is provided with hand grip members 19.
Attached to the platform 10 adjacentthe handle end of the blade are spaced guides 20, 21 supported by braces 22 and 23 from the platform and between which the knife is 1eceived and guided during the cutting action.
Preferably a steel ledger strip 24 will be attached to one inner face of the opening 11 to coact with the cutting edge of the knife, as illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be manufactured entirely of wood except the blade and the bracket 16 and guides 20 and 21.
The improved device may be of any desired size or capacity and will be found very eicient for cutting up corn stalks and other fodder material for packing in silos and for feeding` direct.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specifications, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention what Serial No. 606,169.
is claimed as new is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprisinga supporting platform having a longitudinally directed slot and holding cleats transversely beneath the platform and transversely of the slot, a bracket device including spaced sides with one side mounted on said platform adjacent to one end of said slot and the other side bearing upon the adjacent cleat within the slot, guide standards formed with spaced sides disconnected at their upper ends, with one side attached at its lower end to said platform and the other side attached to the adjacent cleat within the slot, a ledger plate located within the slot and attached to one side of the same, the terminals of the plate being held respectively at the endsbeneath the lower end at one side of the guide member and one side member of the standard and bearing upon the cleats, and a knife member pivoted at one end to said bracket and operating between said guide standards, the cutting edge of said knife coacting with said ledger plate.
2. Anapparatus ofthe character set forth having a platform with a support and con necting cleats, said platform having a slot transversely to said cleats; guides, and a divided bracket connected respectively to said cleats near the opposite ends of said slot, a ledger blade resting at its ends on said cleats and against one wall of the slot, and a movable blade pivoted in said bracket and working in said slot and guides.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
