2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Mud April 27, 1937. E. E. LONG REVOLVING CUTTING DEVICE Filed March 31, 1936 By @zm Patented Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates generally to an attachment for a grain divide board for cutting off the grain as it is pushed onto the platform of the combine by the grain reel, so that the grain on the platform is freed to go into the threshing part of the combine, and an important object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement of the character indicated whereby the operation of the combine is greatly facilitated and made more efiicient.
Another important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character indicated which can be easily and inexpensively incorporated in standard types of combines.
Other important objects of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view showing a combine reel in driving relation to the rotary cutter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken through the rotary cutter and showing the horizontal cutting blade and guard in top plan.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral refers generally to the end portion of the reel of the combine which is partly supported by the declining bar 3 and has on its axle 1 the sprocket wheel 3 over which is trained the sprocket chain 9 which sprocket chain is trained over a small sprocket wheel ID on an axle H which has fixed thereto the larger sprocket wheel l2 over which is trained the sprocket chain l3 which is also trained over the small sprocket wheel I4 which is fixed to the axle IE on which is also the rotary cutter I6.
Pivotally connected to the axle I5 is the tightener and supporting bar ll and also the tightening and supporting bar l8 on which is slidably mounted the chain tightener sprocket 19 which is adjustable in the slot 20. A bolt 2! in a slot 22 in the upper end of the bar 18 connects with the bar 6. A bolt 23 in the slot 24 in the left hand end of the bar ll adjustably connects the bar H with the vertical frame member 25 which has a bolt 26 which secures the bar 6 at the left hand end thereof.
The idler sprocket I9 which is utilized as a sprocket tightener, engages the underside of the lower flight of the sprocket chain 9.
A tightener bar 2! carries the axle [5 at its lower end and has a slot 28 in its upper end which is slidable on the axle II and adjustably secured by a wing nut 21 threaded in the end of the axle II.
The lower end of the frame member 25 is fastened in conjunction with the combine platform 39 and also attached to the vertical member 25 by the bolt 31 is the knife carrying bar 32 which has on its laterally outward side the cutting knife 33. Attached at the forward end of the knife by bolts or rivets 3:2 traversing the bar 32 and having a laterally outwardly deflected portion 35 is the guard which is generally designated 36 and which extends along the laterally outer side of the rotary cutter E6, the rotary cutter having its peripheral edge extending between the bar 32 with its cutter 33; and the guard 35.
The various bars described may be of strap iron and due to their arrangement and combination can be adjusted to tighten the various sprocket chains for efficient operation and to take up wear.
As the grain is picked up and cut oif by the cutter knife it is then pushed onto the platform 30 by the grain reel 5. In accordance with the present invention, as the grain comes in contact with the rotating cutting disk i6 and the cutting blade 33 on the cross bar 32, the grain which extends out over the end of the platform, will be cut off, and the grain on the platform made free to travel without impediment into the threshing part of the machine. The cutter of the invention is used at the outer end of the platform and positively prevents lodging of the grain on the end of the platform.
The rotary cutter I6 is a disk with teeth 36 on its periphery which are segmental in shape and which in conjunction with the guard 35 and the cutter 33 on the bar 32, positively shear and cut the grain overhanging the end of the platform.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials, and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a combine having a platform and a reel, a knife at the outer end of the platform, a guard in spaced parallelism with the knife, and rotary cutter means adjustably supported adjacent the outer end of the platform and working between the knife and the guard in shearing relation to said knife for cutting off grain bridging the knife and the guard, and drive means connecting the reel and the rotary cutter. 2. In combination with a combine having a platform and a reel, a horizontal knife at the 5 outer end of the platform, a guard in spaced parallelism with the knife, and rotary, cutter means adjustably supported adjacent the outer end of the platform and Working between the knife and the guard in shearing relation to said knife for cutting off grain bridging the knife and the guard, and drive means connecting the reel and the rotary cutter, means supporting said horizontal knife and a guard thereon extending along the laterally outward side of the rotary cutter.
