WILLIAM WINKLER AND ARTHUR H. MILLER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CASTER.
Application leid October 24, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, vWILLLIAM WINKLER and ARrHun H. MILLER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn,
in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to casters used with articles of furniture and the main object is to provide an eflicient and easily mounted caster which will readily facilitate the mov ing of such articles.
Another object is to provide a swivel type of caster which consists of a minimum number of parts, any of which are easily removable, and is comparatively inexpensive in cost of manufacture.
These and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briey to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevational vie-w of the caster as 25 applied to an article of furniture.
Figure 2 is a bottom` pla'n View of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional elevational view of the caster.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the caster having a shell type leg body attached thereto.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the roller yoke.
Describing the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 indicates the leg of an article of furniture which has a `guard plate 2, of any desired shape, mounted on its lower surface by screws 3. An annular lug l surmounting the plate is housed in a corresponding recess in the furniture leg and serves as a centen ing element. rllhe centre of said guard plate has a threaded ho-le therein which receives the threaded stud 5 projecting from lthe upper surface of an annular flange `6. The latter is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed wings 7 and are grasped by the ngers and rotated, when the stud 5 is secured in the threaded hole. The lower surface of said flange 6 has an extending 4pin Serial No. 596,678.
8 which is peened over after being inserted into the hole 9 of the roller yoke 1(7),
The yoke has two parallel spaced ears 11 betweenl which a roller 12 is mounted on a pin shaft 13, said shaft being journalled in the holes 14. The roller is preferably of light construction having a central rib 14, a curved spherical tract-ion surface 15, and a hub 16 thru which the pin shaft 18 passes, the latter being peened over after being placed in position between the ears 11.
Various types of guards may be applied to the lower ends of legs, those most frequently' used being illustrated in the several views. The guard illustrated in Figure l is of the shell type comprising a tapering annular wall 17 which forms a chamber 18, the latter receiving the lower end of the furniture leg. The base 19 of the guard shell has a pair of spaced apart tapering lugs 2O and fit into recesses in the bottom of the furniture leg to prevent the guard shell from heilig dislocated. The usual threaded hole is provided in the base 19 and receives the stud 5 of the caster flange 6.
It is apparent from the drawing` that the caster herein disclosed is of simple design, eliicient as a swivel type, as it is readily ro tatable upon member 8, and can be easily replaced by removing the stud 5, the latter operation being accomplished by rotating the wings 7.
W'e elaiin:-
A caster comprising' a roller, a yoke having a conical hole, ears on said yoke, a pin between said ears supporting said roller, a plate adapted to be secured to au article cf furniture and having a threaded hole therein, a flange, a threaded stud on said flange engaging' the hole in said plate, a pin rigid on the face of said flange, said pin registering in the conical hole of said yoke, the latter being pivoted on said pin, and wings on the face of said flange adapted to rotate the flange and stud into the threaded hole.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 30 day of Sept. A. D. 1922.
