BED Loo'KQ- j- 1' Application filed August 21, 1922, 'Seria1 Noi 583,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Porn COBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Browns ville, in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Bed Look, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby the rail of a bedstead may be assembled with a bed post detachably, the rail being held securely but releasably upon the post, and it being possible to reverse the rail.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and laimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a trough-shaped socket which, preferably is made of metal. The socket 20 includes a side 21, a top 22 projecting from the side, and a bottom 23 projecting from the side. rections, from the top 22 and from the bottom 23 and are adapted to be attached by securing elements 25 to the post 26 a bed, so as to hold the socket on the bed. The side 22 is turned inwardly as at 40 to form an end 27 located between the top 22 and the bottom 23. constructed otherwise, to form a projection 28. A pivot element 29, which may be a bolt is mounted in the top 22 and the bottom 23 and is located relatively near to the end 27. A jaw 30 is provided and is located between the elements 22 and 23, the jaw including a bearing 31 surrounding the pivot element 27, the jaw 30 thus being mounted for swinging movement on the Flanges 24 project in opposite di-' The side 21 is bent inwardly or pivot element. Collars or spacers 32 surround the pivot element 29 and are interposed between the longitudinal edges of the jaw 30 and the members 22and 23, so as to space the longitudinal edges of the jaw from the said members, as depicted in Figure 1. A clamping device 33 such as a bolt and wing nut, extends through the side 21 and through the jaw 30.
The numeral 34 marks a. bed-rail including a flange 64 provided in one end with a notch or seat 35. The bed rail'34 comprises a flange 37 provided .in one end with a notch or seat 38. A recess 39 is formed in theouter surface of the flange 37.
In practical operation the clamping device 33 is loosened,'and the bed rail 34 is moved to the left into the position shown in Figure 3, the notch in the flange 64 receiving one of the collars 32 of the pivot element 29, the flange 64 resting on the bottom 23 of the socket 20, the notch 38 in the flange 37 receiving the bolt member of the clamping device 33 and the projection 28 of the side 21 being received in the recesses 39 which is formed in the flange 37 of the bed rail. Obviously when the clamping device 33 is tightened up, the bed rail will be held securely in position by the jaw 30, cooperating with the socket 20. The device is so constructed that it not only affords a secure mounting for the bed rail, but, as well,'provides a means whereby thebed rail may be reversed. The parts 28 and 29 may be denominated a lug and recess connection which is operative to hold the bed rail against longitudinal movement.
What is claimed is:-
1. In a device of the class described, a
trough-shaped socket comprising a side, a
top and a bottom, a pivot element connecting the top and the bottom; a aw mounted to swing onthe pivot element,'between the top and the bottom, in a direction at right angles to the side; a clamping device con- 100 necting the jaw with the side; and a rail comprising flanges, one of which is disposed between the jaw and the side, the other of which is disposed between the jaw and the bottom. Y
2. In a device of the class described, a trough-shaped socket comprising, as cooper: ating parts, a top and a bottom, and including a side connecting said cooperating parts; a pivot element carried by one of said FFICEJ cooperating parts; a jaw mounted to swing seats receiving, respectively, thepivot ele- 10 on the pivot element in a direction at right ment sndthe clamping device.
