Description

W. T. FRY.
Shuttar-Fasteners. V `No. 146,760. Patemedlamgnlam;
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
IILLIAM T. FRY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
iMPRoi/EMENT iN sHuTTER-FAsTl-:Naas
Specification forming part oi Tet' exs Patel-.t LTO-146,760, dated January 27, 1874; application tiled J anuary 3, 1874.
To all uhom it may concern Be itknown that I, WILLIAM T. FRY, of the city ot' Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New` York, have invented certain Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners, ot' which the following is a` specication:
The object of my invention is to provide for a shutter-fastener which will hold the shutter securely to a hook placed in the wall of a house, and to which it can be hooked or unhooked without leaning' out ot' the window. My invention consists in making a recess in the outside ot the shutter opposite the hook in the wall, th us permittin the hook to pass into the said recess, and letting the shutter come close to i the wall. Into a hole bored horizontally into the shutter, in a line with,and terminating in the recess, a tube is placed, which is laid into a recess in-"the side of the shutter near to the window, and held there by aid of screws. Inside of the tube, having a square bore, is placed a square sliding rod, the outer end of which is made to tit into the hook in the wall, and is kept into the saine by aid of a spiral spring surrounding the rod at or near the inner end, which for this purpose is made round. projections cast'to the sides ofthe bore ofthe tube, against which the spiral spring lies, serve to prevent the square rod from being thrown 1 too far forward. In the inner end of the square rod is cut a longitudinal vertical slot, into which a projection forming a part of the tube inserted. 1n the cxtreme end of the rod, and in the slot, is pivoted acani-lever, the handle of which, when pla-ced parallel to the side ot' the shutter, lies in a recess cut into the aforementioned plate. Then the handle is placed perpendicular to the side of the shutter, a cani on the inner end of the lever presses be closed.
In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawing formin a part of this specification.
Figure I.is a sectional plan view of the window-frame, shutter, and fastener embodying my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged detached sectional view of the fastener.
A represents the wall ot' a house, to which is fastened the hook B. O represents a shutter, hinged at d d to the wall A. E is the recess cut into the shutter at f. g is the hole cut into the shutter, in which is placed the tube H cast or made in two parts, and having a square bore, i, in which is placed the square rod J, being rounded at k,and surrounded by the spiral spring L. m m are the two projections against which the spiral spring rests. fn is the slot in the end of the rod J. o is the projection, forming a part of the tube H, titting into the slot n. l) is the cani-lever, pivoted at q q to the end of the rod J, and lying in the slot n. r is the recess in the plate S.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- A shutter-fastener, consisting of the rod J, placed in the tube H, thrown forward against the hook B by aid of the spiral spring L, and thrown backward by aid of the ca1nlever P placed in the recess r of the plate S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
XVM. T. FRY.
