f PALMER KENNEDY, or frnooivni, WASHINGTON.-
Application filed May 10,
To all whom t may cof/wem.'
Be it known that I, PALMER KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting DeT vices, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to a holder for cutting blades and is intended primarily for use in ripping `seams and doing other similar light work. Y
It is an object of my invention to provide a device the parts of which may be taken apart and put together without danger or injury to the user and which shall in general be saving and convenient in use.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a p art hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is an elevation 'of one form of my device,
Figure 2 is a section on line .2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an elevation of another form,
Figure 4e is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is an elevation of another form,
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5, and
Figure 6a is a section of a modified forni.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a piece which may be stamped out of sheet metal or otherwise formed and which serves at the same time as a handle and as a means for carrying thev remainT ing parts. The cutting device 'is shown at 11 and this cutting device appears in the dra-wings as a razor blade of the type used in the Gillette safety razor, but safety razor blades of other types, as well as other cutting devices may be used as will be obvious.
In the form of my invention shown in Figure 1 the holding device 10 has a bentover portion at 12. The blade is to be inserted between this portion and the main body and a clamping member 13 forced down over the same. The clamping mernber will force the free edges of parts 10 and 12 down on the blade and hold the same firmly in lace. Preferably I mount the member 13 on a pivot as at 14 but this 1921. serial No. 468,390.
is not essential as the member 'may be and 4 the handle 10 and the blade 11 are similar' to those of 4Figure 1, the bent# overl portion of the handle being, however, omitted. One or vmore[projections 16 are formed on the back ofthe holderto assist in 'positioning the blade and retaining -it in place. 'A clip 17 engages kover the rear of the blade and holder and enters a longitudinal notch or depression 18 inthe back of the holder to aid in holding the clip in place. This clip' may be either rigid or resilient and is intended to ybe movedendwise into the position shown, the lower edge sliding in the' depression 18. A shoulder 19 is'formed on the handle 10 and the clip 17 when in working position as shown in Figure 3, bears against said shoulder to prevent excessive rearward movement ofthe clip.
IIn the modification shown in and 6 the handle comprises a blade-holding portion 10 and a folding portion '2O pivoted thereto and adapted when folded to Iserve-as a guard for the blade, asin the ordinary pocket knife. A `pivot 21 of any convenient type,v Serves to connect the partsk 1,0 and A2O. This pivot may be in the form of an eyelet, whereby it may serve i, Figures 5 both as a pivot and as a means for attachment of a chain or cord whereby the device 4'can be rfastened tothe clothing of the user in ordinary manner. I prefer, however, to provide a hole at the lower right-hand corner of the device as shown in Figure 5 and to engage a ring in the hole. The projections 16 on the handle should be made of sufficient height to engage slight indentations in the folding portion of the handle which are formed so as to register with the projectionsv when the folding portion is closed as shown in the drawings. A slight longitudinal rib or ridge 18 on the handle holds the clfp 17 in place, the lower edge of the clip engag- 5, 6 and 6a provide a convenient device t be carried in the pocket. I
Having thus fully described my said invention, whatA I claim as new 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A cutting device comprising a bladeholding portion for safety-razor blades or the like, a clip to hold the `blade in place, said clip being movable longitudinally of said blade-holder, means on the holder to prevent transverse movement of vthe clip, means on the holder to limit longitudinal movement of the clip, rand a folding handle covering the exposed edge of the blade, said clip and folding handle eachhavingan edge engaging with the blade holding"v portion and the blade respectively, substantially as set forth. Y
2. A vcutting device comprising a blade holding portion for safety razor blades or the like, a clip -movable longitudinally of said blade holder to clamp the'blade thereto,
proections on the holder to engage openings in the blade, a folding handle covering the exposed edge of the blade, said handlehaving depressions also adaptedvfor engagement by said projections, substantially as set forth.
3. A cutting device comprising a holder, a separate flat blade having only one face in contact with said holder, anda clip engaging over the adjacent edges of the blade and holder, to holdthe blade in place, the clip being engageable with the holder and 'blade by a longitudinal sliding movement, and means on the'holder to hold the clipy against transverse movement, substantiallyv as setA forth.
4L. cutting device comprising a onepiece holder, means to secure a blade to one side of the holder, a channeled handle folding over andl enclosing lan edge of the blade and holder, and projections on the holder to fix the plate in place and also spring out the sides of the handle when in closed position, substantially as set forth.
5. A cutting device comprising a holder,
means to secure a blade to one side of the holder,- a channeled handle folding over and -enclosing an edge of the blade and holder,
and means for spreading the sides of the handle when in closed position, whereby the handle Vis held in such position, substantially as set forth.
6. A cutting-device comprising a holder, a blade carried thereby, a folding channeled handle adapted to enclose the blade and holder at one edge, said holder having one or more raised portions arranged lengthwise thereof to extend through holes in the blade and engage the inside of the handle to assist in holding the same in closed position, substantially as set forth.
7. A cutting device comprising a holder, a blade carried thereby, a folding channeled handle adapted to enclose the blade Vand holder at one edge, ythere being projections along the lower edge of one of said members to engage the adjacent face of the other to hold lthe parts in closed position, substantially as set forth. i
8. A cutting device comprising a holder for a'i'safety razor blade, a channeled handle pivoted thereto, and adapted in one position to cover an edge of the blade and in another position extending rearwardly in line With the holder, said handle having one end offset to form Wings extending at all times over the rear edge of the blade, substantially as set forth.
9. A cutting device comprising a holder, a blade resting against the holder, a clipl engaging over the adjacent edges of the blade and holder, means to hold the clip with its lower edges parallel to an edge of the blade, a` channeled handle pivoted to the holder and adapted to venclosel the opposite edges of the holder and the blade, the edges ofthe channeled Ahandle adapted to rest closely against those of the clip, substantially as set forth. Y
Inwvitness whereof. I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Washington, District of Columbia this 6th day of May, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-one.
I 'PALMER KENNEDY. [n s] 'FRANK W. DAHN, MARIE A. SHAW. n
