UNITED starts JP; o me E.
MORRIS FOLKMAN, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOBIOF ONE-HALF T0 FRANK,J. I
CHALUS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BAD GE-PIN CLASP.
Application filed March 14, 1923. Serial No. 625,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS FOLKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badge-Pin Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pin catch or device for the purpose of preventing the loss of a pin or badge such as those attached to a garment by means of a penetrating pin on the back of the badge, the object being to provide an improved device which will engage the point of the pin and prevent the same being withdrawn from the garment to which it i applied. The device comprises a keeper which is pivoted to the badge or plate bearing the pin, and this keeper can be swung so as to engage over the point of the pin and when so engaged will be fastened by a catch which must be manually released to swing the keeper to disengagement and permit the pin to be withdrawn from the garment.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a rear plan view of a badge or the like provided with the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a modification.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 6 indicates the plate or body of a badge or emblem, and 7 a pin secured at one end to the back thereof, the point of the pin being free to penetrate the garment as usual.
The loss-preventing device comprises a small loop or keeper 8 which is mounted transversely on a lever 9 pivoted at 10 to the back of the plate 6 in a position adjacent or beside the point of the pin, the arrangement being such that the lever may be swung to cause the loop 8 to enclose the point of the pin as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. To hold the lever in such position the back of the plate 6, at the side of the pin point opposite the pivot 10, is provided with a small hook or catch 11 under which the lever may be engaged to hold it in locked position, as shown in Fig. 1. The lever will be made of flat spring metal so that when swung into locking position as shown it may be sprung toclear or pass the catch 11, and then retracted to engage under the catch. When so engaged the point of the pin will be within the loop 8, and accordingly the pin cannot be withdrawn. from the garment. To release the pin the lever is disengaged from the catch 11 and then sprung outwardly to clear the same and then swung around on the pivot to withdraw the loop 8 from the pin point. This uncovers the point of the pin and will permit the pin to be withdrawn from the garment to detach the badge. The keeper 8 as shown consists of a U-shaped bend formed integral with the lever 9 but obviously may consist of a separate piece attached to the lever, or be otherwise constructed to form a cover or enclosure for the point of the pin.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, the
lever 9 is split at its freeend to form two 7 branches 9 each of which is engageab-le under a hook 11 projecting from the back of the plate. The branches are engaged with or disengaged from the hook by pressing the same toward each other until they will pass through the space between the hooks, which face toward each other.
The inventionis not limited to the particular forms shown, but various modifications are possible within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. The combination with a badge or the like having an attaching pin at the back, of a lever pivoted to the back of the badge and having a keeper adapted to cover the point of the pin, and a catch on the badge, engageable by the lever to hold the same in closed position.
2. The combination with a badge or the like having a pin at the back thereof,of a lever pivoted to the back of the badge, to swing in a plane parallel to the back of the badge, and provided with a keeper adapted to cover or uncover the pin point,
and means engageable with the lever to hold the same/in closed position.
3. The combination with a, badge or the 5 like provided with a, pin at the back, of a.
lever pivoted to the back of the badge at one side of the pin point and provided with a loop adapted to cover the pin point when in closed position, and a catch projecting from the back of the badge and engageable 10 by the lever to hold the same in closed position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix Iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS FOLKMAN.
