To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. VVHITE, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Retaining Bars or Plates for Foundry Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved form or construction of sand retaining and reinforcing bar or plate for use inv connection with foundry molding flasks.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved bar or plate adapted to be readily produced at low cost and having parts thereof expanded or pressed out of the plane of the bar or plate in order to forman effective interlock with the sand with which the flask is filled to thereby more effectually re tain the sand in place, and also to increase the strength of the bar or plate in order to more effectually reinforce or stiffen the flask.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the cope member of a foundry flask having two sand retaining and reinforcing bars formed in ac-- cordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the 30 cope member shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the improved sand retaining bar or plate taken on the line IIIIII of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the sand retaining bar or plate taken on the line IVIV of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is .a similar sectional view of a somewhat modified form of sand retaining bar or plate.
The cope member of the foundry flask illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is of rectangu lar form having the opposite side walls 2 and the opposite end'walls 3, these walls being formed around their upper edges with 4 an outwardly directed flange t and around their lower edges with an inwardly directed flange 5. The side and end walls 2 and 3 of the cope member are formed with outwardly pressed sand retaining corrugations 6 and the end walls are provided with apertured lugs 7 to receive the aligning pins of the drag member of the flash. lifted. The flask member itself does not, of course, form any part of the present invention, the particular construction shown forming the subject matter of Patent No. 1,447,- 666 to Jencks et al., and being fully described and claimed therein.
It will, of course, be understood that the subject mater of the present invention is not restricted to its use with the specific construction of flask illustrated, but is applicable to substantially all forms of foundry flasks. I
The flask member illustrated is shown equipped with two of the improved sand retaining bars in accordance with the pres ent invention, the bars extending between the opposite side walls 2 and being secured to these side walls in any suitable manner, as by welding as indicated in Figure 1. The retaining bar or plate 9 comprises a single strip or sheet of metal which is provided with one or more longitudinal rows or se ries of transversely extending slits 10 as shown particularly in Figure 2. The metal of'the plate between adjacent pairs of slits 10 is expanded or pressed out of the plane of the metal to one or both sides'of the plate to form projec'tingloops 11, as indicated most clearly in Figures 3, 4 and 5.
In the particular form of bar illustrated in the drawings it will be seenfrom Figure 3 that the portion of the bar or platebetween the end of the plate and the first slit of the row thereof is left flat and that the metal of the bar or plate between the first pair of slits is pressed downwardly out of the plane of the plate and the metal between the succeeding pairs of slits is pressed alternately upwardly and downwardly out of the plane of the plate in order to provide alternate downwardly and upwardly projecting loops 11 of a form'such as that shown in Figure 4.
In the form of bar or plate shown in Fig ure 4 and at the transverse plane of the line IVIV the metal between the slits of the central row or series thereof is pressed upthereof is pressed in one. direction out of the:
plane of the plate, while the metal between the succeeding aligned or corresponding pairs of slits of all three rows thereof is pressed in the oppositedireetion, asclearly shown in the figure;
It will be readily understood that the bar or plate providedin themanner described with the projecting loops ll will form an effective interlock with; the sandwhich. is packed into the flask member and that the sand will be. securely retained in place within the flask. The bar or plate forms ineffect an open mesh structure through, the meshes of which the sand may pass so. that the sand surrounds and securely. interlocks with all'parts of the bar or plate instead of simply frictionally engaging tl'e opposite surfaces of the bar or plate as in the. usual formsof such bars.
