UNITED...
ERNEST O. WOLFE, OF GILLETTE, NEW JERSEY.
VAPORIZER AND PRIMER.
Application filed September 21, 1921. Serial No. 502,272.
T 0 all whom it may cancer n:
Be it known that I, ERNEST O. WoLFr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gillette, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers and Primers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a device for attaching to a motor of the internal combustion type, that will facilitate the operation of the engine and particularly relates to means for priming the engine to assist in starting the motor. v
The object of this invention is toprovide in a device of this character, means for permitting the introduction into the manifold or similar part of a motor, of a fluid that will quickly vaporize to furnish a gas to facilitate the starting, of the engine, and which will retain the fluid inside of the manifold in a portion that is exposed to the manifold to permit a ready evaporation.
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the priming device.
Fig.
Fig. device.
This invention comprises essentially a priming device to be attached to the manifold of an explosive engine.
This device as shown comprises a body portion 2 of tubular form having the usual priming cup and valve 3, screwed into one end that is threaded for this purpose. The latter is provided with a plug 4.- and a handle 5 so that a liquid can be poured into the upper cup portion 6 and flow into the body 2 when the valve is opened. Then the valve is closed as usual to prevent escape of the pressure and gas in the manifold. The body 2 has an extension 7 that has screw threads 8 at the middle portion, with-the end portion 9 closed at the end 10 and provided with several openings at the top of the end portion, preferably by a number of saw-cuts 12. The member 2 with the parts 2 is a plan view of the same. 3 is a vertical section through the 7 and 9 are preferably integral and may be a casting.
The body has the threaded portion 8 screwed into a suitable threaded aperture in the manifold, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and locked therein with the valve cup extending upward and also the slots at the inner end. The valve is opened and a suitable liquid such as ether and gasoline is poured into the cup 6 that will flow through the tube and not escape atthe end, except through the slots at the top, whereby the tube will remain practically filled with this fluid. The valve is closed and the motor star-ted and the suction in the manifold will act through the slots and draw the gas or vapor out of the body portion until it is exhausted, which will form the desired mixture and greatly assist in starting the motor.
This priming device can be used in combination with a moisture. device, and for this purpose it is provided with a tubular extension 14 at the top of the body portion 2 adapted to receive a pipe 15 that leads to a suitable receptacle for water.
It will be seen that a device as shown in Fig. 2 is very simple and economical to produce, being merely a casting that is threaded at several portions and provided with the slots, and the conventional priming cup 3 is applied at one end. This device as attached to the manifold in place of the usual priming cup 3 at its threaded portion that will be of the same size. Where the motor is provided with the priming cup as 3, it is only necessary to remove the same and apply the priming cup to the body 2 and screw the body into the threaded opening in the manifold from which the priming cup was removed;
What I claim is:
1. A priming device, comprising a tube externally threaded, a valve on the outer end of the tube and provided with a priming cup, the tube being closed at its inner end beyond the threads and provided with small openings in the top of such portion.
2. A priming device comprising a tube threaded at its middle portion with the inner end closed, the tube having several narrow slits at the upper part of the inner end portion beyond the threads, and a valve on the outer portion of the tube.
3. The combination with amanifold of a priming device comprising a tube projecting into the manifold, a valve on the outer end of the tube and provided with a priming cup, the tube being closed at its inner end portion beyond the threads and provided with small openings in the top of such portion.
Signed at New York city, N. Y., on September 19, 1921.
ERNEST O. WOLFF.
