To all whom it may cone-em:
Be it known that I, JOHN PrnNnNnn, a citizen of rLustria-Hungary, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Davenport and Bed, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a specification.
This invention relates to a convertible davenport and bed.
Among the objects of the invention are to obtain a combined davenport and bed which is readily changed from a davenport to a bed, and back again; to obtain a construction which, when the several parts and members are in position forming a. daven port, gives no suggestion that the device is convertible into a bed; to obtain a construction which a woman or well grown child can easily and quickly convert from a davenport to a bed, and also from a'bed to a davenport; to obtain a construction which, when the parts thereof which form a bed are in position forming said bed, the'parts forming a davenport are in position to be well protected from injury, soiling or defacing; and the parts forming the bed will form a substantially full sized one, With the members thereof held rigidly and firmly in place, with no liability to collapse or change their relative positions; and which will permit as rough usage thereto as an ordinary bed, with no liability of injury thereto; which will present a bed of suitable height, open in appearance, and not suggestive to the occupants thereof its convertibility, or a feeling of restriction and sulfocation. Further objects are to-obtain a. convertible davenport and bed which in being converted to the other form thereof, the seat and back beingin a vertical plane as above recited, requires a. single operation, the several parts and members being so connected together as to require no attention or care on the part of person operating the device.

The foregoing description of the frame adapted to coact with the hereinafter described and claimed invention is recited to make clear the relation of said invention to said frame.
.The bed comprises a frame to which a spring mattress is secured, in the ordinary way; said mattress forming no part of the invention is not illustrated. The bed frame consists of a plurality of irons which are pivotally joined, to permit the folding of the bed from the position illustrated in F igs. l, 2 and 3, into the bed box A as is illustrated in Fig. 5. i
D, D represent the head and foot rails, which are made of angle iron, and bent at right angles near the ends thereof, to form a part of the side rails; the remainder of the side rails consists of angle irons having the referencecharacters E, E and F applied thereto. Said members D, DE E, E and F being pivotally joined, as is particularly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings. All of said joints comprise the same members, and hence the lettering thereof in said Fig. 6 is adhered to throughout the several figures, and for all said joints' 6, 0, represent members which are attached to the end of 'one of themeeting irons, by rivets e c and to the other of said meeting irons by pivot 6 The pivoted one of the joined angle irons is rounded at the end of the vertical member thereof, as at f, Fig. 6; and said joint is so made that the horizontal members of said angle irons abut against each other as at 7. Lever G is provided at one end thereof with slot f and (Z represents a pin or bolt which is rigidly secured in member D, of the .bed frame, to move easily in said slot. represents .abolt which is rigidly secured in lever G. G represents a standard which is. rigidly secured to the bed boX A and which is provided with a curved track 9 on which the bolt travels when the bed is being opened'or closed. lVhen the bedis opened the bolt rests on the upper end of standard G and G represents a keeper member attached to said standard, between which and the top of said standard said bolt is retained. The lever G is pivotally attached, at one end thereof to the lever G, as recited, and is pivotally attached, at the other end, to member F of the bed frame, by pivot or bolt g. H represents legs which are secured by rivets h, h, to the pivoted member H said member H being pivoted between members 6, e, of the joint between members D and E by pivot 7L1, said members 6, e, at this joint being Lshaped to permit said pivoting. Said member H is pivotally attached to lever H by pivot or pin 7%. Lever H is pivotally attached, by pin or bolt to iron, F of the bed. Attention is directed to the function of levers G, G, being two fold; first, as the bed is folded into the bed box said levers turn irons D on pivots e 6 of the connection which joins it to irons E, E, from the position in'which it. is illustrated inFigs. 1, 2. 3 and 4:, into the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 5; and secondly, when said levers are in the position in which they are illustrated in said figures, they coact with the abutting ends of the horizontal members of irons E, E, and F, F, inantaining said irons F, F, in horizontal planes.

The subframe J is turned from its position, when the bed is opened, through an angle of 180, in closing the bed into bed box 31 and hence, standard J which extends upward from said subframe, when the bed is open, extends downward therefrom when the bed is closed, and irons E, E, of the bed frame, not being moved to any considerable extent from a horizontal plane when the bed is being opened or closed, the standard J, on said irons E continuously remains in a substantially vertical plane and hence, when the bed is open the distance of irons E, E, and the entire bed frame), from the subframe, is the height of the standard J less the height of standard J* and when the bed is closed the distance between said irons E, E, and said subframe is the height of standard J plus the height of standard J*.
The above operation lowers the bed well into the bed box A in closing it.
The lever K being fulcrumed on bolt 76 in the same horizontal plane as is said subframe fulcrumed (on bolt j), turns leg L from the vertical plane supporting one end of said subframe when the bed is open, as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, into a substantially hori zontal plane. When the bed is closed, as is illustrated in Fig. 5; said subframe being above the bed, the cross bar J of said sub frame, is in convenient position to grasp and partially open the bed, say, into the position illustrated in Fig. 4. At said time the cross bar 1 is in position to be conveniently grasped to complete the opening of the bed.
I claim;
1. In a combined davenport and bed, a davenport frame, and a standard rigidly secured to said frame, said standard provided with a curved track on one side thereof, in combination with a bed frame consisting of a head and a foot rail and side rails, said side rails comprising a plurality of angle irons and means to pivotally join adjacent ends thereof, levers pivotally joined, one of said levers pivotally attached to one of said angle irons, and the other provided with a slot, an abutment, (cl) rigidly secured to an additional one of said angle irons and movable in said slot, and an additional bolt rigidly secured to said slotted lever and adapted to co-act with the upper end and curved track of said standard.
2. In a combined davenport and bed, side rails respectively consisting of a plurality of angle irons, means to pivotally join adj acent ends thereof, levers pivotally joined, one of said levers pivotally joined to one of said angle irons on each side of said bed and,
the other provided with a slot, a bolt rigidly secured to said last named lever, and bolts in one of the end ones of said angle irons movable in said slot, in combination with standards respectively provided with a curved side, said bolts in said levers arranged to co-act with the ends and curved side of said standards, and a pivoted subframe, standards on said subframe, stand-- ards on corresponding ones of said angle irons, and bolts pivotally joining said standards.
3. In a combined davenport and bed, side rails respectively consisting of a plurality of angle irons, means to pivotally join adjacent ends thereof, L-shaped members pivotally joined to one of the end ones of said angle irons, legs attached to said L-shaped members and to corresponding ones of said angle irons, and levers pivotally joined to said L-shaped members, in combination with levers pivotally joined, one thereof pivotally joined to an additional one of said angle irons and the other provided with a slot i and a bolt rigidly secured thereto, bolts in the remaining one of the end ones of said angle irons movable in said slots, standards respectively provided with a curved side, said bolts in said slotted levers arranged to coact with the ends and curved sides of said standards.
4:. In a combined davenport and bed, a collapsible bed frame the side rails whereof include a plurality of pivotally connected angle irons, means to support said angle irons in a horizontal plane, levers pivotally; joined, one of said joined levers pivotally connected to the vertical member of the midway ones of said angle irons and the other of said joined levers provided with a slot, an abutment, (g to said slotted lever, and an abutment, (d) on the end one of said angle irons at one end of said bed movable in said slot,
in combination with a standard provided with a curved side and with a substantially horizontal upper end, said joined levers and theabutment on the slotted one thereof in spaced relation to the curved side and horizontal upper end of said standard, so that, the angle iron provided with said abutment which is in said slot, and the angle iron pivotally attached thereto being in a horizontal plane, the turning of said subframe an angular distance of 180 and into a horizontal plane, moves the abutment on said slotted lever along said curved side and on to said horizontal end of said standard.

In a combined davenport and bed, a frame and a box in said frame, in combina. tion with a collapsible bed frame and a subframe, said bed frame comprising side rails which respectively include a mid-way member, additional members pivotally connected to the ends of said mid-way members, and end members pivotally connected to said additional members, and a pivotal connection between corresponding ones of said additional members and said subframe, levers pivotally connected, one of said levers pivotally connected to said mid-way member and the other provided with a slot and connected to an end member by an abutment in said slot, an L-shaped member pivotally connected to the other end member and an additional lever pivotally connected to said mid-Way member and tosaid L-shaped member, said pivotal connections being in spaced relation to automatically position said midway and additional members in parallel vertical planes when said bed frame is collapsed, and to position all the members 1 of said side rails in the same horizontal plane when said bed frame is extended.
