Description
NI'IED TATES PATENT FFIGE.
DANIEL T CASEMEN'I, 01 PAINESVILLE, 01110.
MPROV'EIVIENT IN FURNACES FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specifi c1tin f8rming art of Letters Patent N0. 1 1 6,653, dated Jannary 20, 1Sf4j 3Ppiie1mtion filed December' 18, 1873.
T0 all zho'nt it mag] concerm Be it known that I, DANIEL THOMAS CASE= MENT, of Painesville, in the county of Lake anal State of Ohio, have invented a new Improvement in Furnaces forteam-Builers, of
whioh ehe folloWing is a specification:
1 o1 any othr substanee afrangeol in position to be intensely heated fr0m the fire below, so that said products oome in direot oontact with the hot surfaces 0f the balls or blocks, such perfeob combustion is eflected that all the partioles passing ofl as smoke in ordinary furnaces will be consumed, so that no smoke will be perceptible at the flues, and the I1eat thus stored in the balls will be radiated, and may be easily utilized The balls 01 blooks used for this purpose are arranged in stratums 01 layers 011 a grate above ehe fire-space. In my iuvention the grate is formed of hollow bars of metal o1 any other suit1ble substance, and has a water oircnlation throt'1ggh them, to protect them from oho heat to ivhid h they will be subjeot, I1: is best 120 haietl1'6ii'Wer balls or blocks largor, and those above'gr'adually less in size to the top, by whic'n the entire substances C21- ried 11p by the draft; will be more e-fl'eetually dividedand brought into contact with fohe hot surfaces. Gare must, inany oase, be haken 150 have the area of the mass of balls 01 blocks and the capacity of the interstices sufiicient to 11013 obstruct the drafb, and, if necessa-ry, means will be employed to stir about o1 re-arrgu1 ge the ballS o1 blooks quickly, in case of need, for cleanin g outthe deposit that may collect in the interstices. "Ehe grate for holding the balls is arranged. 130 rise and fall, principally to allow it to be raised temporarily for feeding ehe fuel;
and in the qase of a grate having a watevciroulation forits protection its conneotions With the wafoer-jz1cket Will be by packed telescopic pipG-joints, '01 any e.quivalent thereof that will enable it to rise and fal1 and ad; thesame time niaintain thle proper connection for the circ11- lation of the water.
4 T0 illust1r amte ehe application of my invention, Irefer to the accompanyin g drawin g, in whioh- Figure 1 represents a seetional elevat-ion, and
Fig. 2 a horizontal se'otion, of alle furnzice of a boiler of the locomotive type.
In the d1awing, A represents the ordinary fire-grate, whereon the fuel to be burned is placed; B, the grate above, fo1r supporting oho balls; und G, the balls, of which, in this case, I have represented th1ee tiers superposed, burmore or less 1nay be usd. Generally theywill be made 0f metal having great powor t0 retain heat, and not fusible at such heat as will be -produced by this mode 0f combustion. Gast or wrought iron, Bessemer stee1, or s0rap-irou will probably be used. If the fire-space is 10W, it is more necessary the grate B be made vortioally adjustable than if it be high, in order to enable it 130 be lifted temporarily for supplying fuel, and, when made of ordinary gratebars, it will be raised and lowered by any simple means, hat, when made of tubesfor a water circulation, the means suitable for raisingthe ordinary grate will not do,and the necessgry oonnctingjoints for the wateroiroulation will hawe to be proVided. F01 thesepurposes,l have represented the grate als suspendedby four tubes, F, extending up through stufimgboxes G in the' erown sheet, anti conneeted above it by cross-bars I, 01- a1'1'3 kind. offrame,
which is suspended from a shaft, J, by chains K, the shaft ext-ending 01113 through the front of fl1e furnace, and ha-ving a crank O1 handwheel, K, f01 turning it, to mise and lowe1 the grate by winding the chains 011" am]. oft. The suspending-tubes F a1e open 120421113 Waterspaee ab the upper ends also to tl1e waterspace in the tubes of the grate-and afl'ord means for the eirculation of tl1e wacer, as Wall 1 as for the supporl: and also the adjustment of the graute, by extending downward a nd into the water-jaoket at the stuffing-boxes X.
In case it may koneedfulto have greater leverage f01' raising the grate and balls, which in some cases Will be veryheavy, the ehains may Wind on a count-er-shaft in the water-spa-ce, with Whi0l1 the crankshafl: may gea-p by Suitable redueing-gears.
In order to prevent the balls fi0m bearing against the walls of the fiie-j2ncket, confining hoops or bands L, of B essemer steel, or ot-her metal o1 substance, proteoted, if pece ssa-ry,' with asbestus, may be used, as shown -111 t1 10 (lrmving, 01 zmy other suitable means may be e1n ployed t0 hold bhe ba1ls away from the walls.
If the draft is obstructed by the bal1s, the flue may be lengthened, 01 jets of steam 01 air may be blown into the fire or the flue.
This plm1 0f consuming smoke Will be partieularly applieable 130 underground railroads zmd other works.
What I claim as new is l. The eombination 0f a. verticallyadjustable frzune 01 grate and a stratum of ba1ls, blocks, or pieces 0f metal supported thereon, with a stationary grate or fire-bed, substantially as sh0wn 2u1d describexh
