To all whom t may concern.' 1 Be it known that we, EDWINA. MCKO and GB01-:on D. Moons, citizens ofthe United States, residing at N ew Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shortcned Conical Cutter Heads, of which the following is a specification.

A. further object of thev invention is to shorten a conical cutter head by the provision of a point inset within an inwardly extending conical cavity whereby the cutter head lirst engages the work upon a circle substantiallyconcentric with the engagement of the centering point. y c
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter` head having `conical sides 'truncated to a predetermined distance from what would be the apex, from the vcircular edge vof the plane of truncation an inwardly extending yconical ,cavity .is formed with a centering bit centrally located within ysuch cavity and extendingalong theaxis of rotaf tion of the head, thepointof such bit terminating substantially in the planey of Said circular edge.
With these and other objects in view, the device comprises certain novel parts, units,
elements, combinations, arrangements and functions, as'will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the use of cutter heads, especially cutter heads intended for the cuttingV ordisen- .tegration of standing stumps, it is found de- Y and inclination is found desirable because to engage the topv of a stump, so that thepoint .of the cuttingV head will clear the stumpwhen the'device is beingset.
The .present invention'is, therefore, direct ed to eliminating a par-t of the vertical dimensions of acutter head,fand still retain the ydesired angle approximately 4.50, Vit being understood, however, that the particular angle is notlessential ,tor the present inven tion. Y

At the plane of truncation indicated'by the edge 11, a'second or reversely inclined knifel 1S is employed, the lower cutting corner of which coincides substantially with the lower cutting corner or" the innermost knives 16. The inner ends of the knives 18 extend to, and areprotected by the shoulder 13 of the centering bit 13, whereby when the device is lowered upon the top of a stump as indicated conventionally at Figure 1, the corsusY ners of the knives 16 and 18 'will rotate about thepoint 14 of thek centering bit 13 and out a circular trough which becomes tapered in both directions `from the line of initial engagement as the cutter head is advanced as an entirety upon its axis of rotation. Then the cutter head has advanced to an extent equal the space between the centering point i#L and the top of the shoulder 13', an annuh` :ib will be formed, inclined in opposite directions to the central point l/l ol the bit 13 at one side, and the line l1 at the opposite side. jrs the head advances still more, the stump will be disintegratec., the shape ot the cut forming to the outline of the head, torniingl an inwardly inclined conical cavity, at the bottom ot which is anupstanding? annular rib inclined to a point in the middle and exterior-ly to the sides or the xenical curity. ivvilhen the cutting ot' the stump has been con'ipleted, the head is litted, and by reason ot the insetting of the point the litt is less in a device constructed in acc-n'dance with the present invention than it is when the point continues to an apex.

l. A cutter head comprising a conical body truncated land Vlformed with a cavity within the perimeter of truncation, and cutters carried by the head conforming substantiall to the lines ol the cone and the cavity.
2. A cutter head substantially conical and truncated, having a conical cavity inset trom the plane ot truncation, and cutters carried by, and coinciding` substantially with the conical sides of the head and the cavity.
2l. A cutter head comprising a substantiall conical body truncated and having' a substantially conical cavity extending inwardly from the plane ot truncation, a centering bit disposed within thev cavity, andk cutters carried by, and co-inciding` substantially with the walls of the body and cavity.
4. A cutter head comprising a substantially conical body truncated and having a substantially conical cavity extending` inwardly from the plane of truncation, a centering,` bit disposed centrally within the cavity and having its point co-inciding approximately with the plane of truncation, and cutters carried by, and substantially coinciding with the walls of the body and the cavity. y
5. A cutter head comprising a truncated conical body, and an inwardly inclined conical cavity extensive with the truncation.
6. A. cutter head having a lplurality of conical surfaces, and cutters co-inciding` substantially with the several surfaces.
7. A cutter head comprising a body having` reverscly disposed substantially conical surfaces, and cutters substantially centerining with the surfaces.
8. A cutter head having a working tace formed by two reversely disposed co-axial, intersecting' right cones.
9. A cutter head having a working tace termed by two truncated cones disposed coaxially with the base Ot one coinciding` with the perimeter ot' truncation of the other.
l0. A, cutterhead comprising a truncated touical body and a izo-axial conical cavity, the ot which is co-eXtensive with the plane ot truncation. f
1l. A. rotary cutter head having;r blades reversely inclined relative tov the axis of rotation, and disposed to describe reversely disposedintersecting conical paths when the head is rotated.
12. A cutter `head having a working tace formed as a surface of revolution with a coaxial re-entrant cavity. f
